Dining in Disneyland Review: Maurice’s Treats at the New Fantasy Faire

There are some NEW EATS in Disneyland and we’ve got the scoop!!

With the new Fantasy Faire opening at Disneyland this week, park goers are very excited to get a peek at what has been hidden by walls for months now…

Fantasy Faire

I was lucky enough to score a wristband to one of the Annual Passholder “sneak preview” days just before the official opening.

Atmosphere

I have to say there is nothing like a brand new, sparkling area at a Disney Park.  I loved the themeing and details.  The colors were amazing; so bright and fresh even on a gloomy day. (And when I say gloomy, I mean pouring rain.)

You can see in the photo below how dark the sky was, but you can also see how awesome the view at the entrance to Fantasy Faire is (tip: a great spot for a castle photo opp)!

The new area features princesses, princesses and more princesses. But me? I was excited to get in line for the new snack cart, Maurice’s Treats. Belle’s father has cooked up some  fun new goodies that I’m sure will be a hit in the park.

Maurice’s Treats stands right across from the new Royal Theatre, and it’s a perfect place to grab a snack before you catch a viewing of “Tangled” & “Beauty and the Beast.”

Eats

The adorable cart features 3 “Twists” and a new signature beverage that people have already been buzzing about; the Boysen Apple Freeze.

Other than the Royal Theatre, there is no seating for snacking in Fantasy Faire. This makes sense because it is a pretty small area. Tables would take up precious royal real estate, which means less room for princess action…

Standing in a downpour I ordered one of each of Maurice’s Treats: A Strawberry Twist, a Chocolate Twist, and a Cheddar Garlic Bagel Twist. I also grabbed a Boysen Apple Freeze to wash them down!

When you order your twists, you can opt to have them put in a bag in case you want to walk over to a bench near Sleeping Beauty’s Castle or around the Hub Area. I quickly photographed my twists and then took them “to go” so I could go and try them in a dry area.

Chocolate Twist
All three of the “twists” were fabulous. I was quite surprised though, to find that the Chocolate Twist was my favorite.  Flaky pastry twisted with chocolate and dusted with powdered sugar, the treat reminded me of a chocolate croissant.  A little on the messy side, but oh so tasty.

Strawberry Twist
I also enjoyed the Strawberry Twist.  Normally I am not a fan of strawberry flavors, but this had a very fresh taste to it.

It was the same format as the chocolate twist, but wrapped with strawberry instead of chocolate.  The strawberry tasted like fresh jam. Warm and wrapped up in the pastry, it was pretty fabulous.

Cheddar Garlic Bagel Twist
I was really thinking that the Cheddar Garlic Bagel Twist would be my favorite of the three, but alas it was not.  I liked it, but it didn’t knock my socks off like I thought it was going to. Partly I think because I did not eat it immediately.

Because the consistency of this twist is a denser bagel and not a flaky pastry, as it cooled off I noticed that it hardened quite a bit. The flavor was good, plenty of cheddar, not too much garlic. And it was not greasy at all.

I think I will go back and try another one while it is still warm and see if it makes a difference.

Boysen Apple Freeze
In addition to the Twists, Maurice’s Treats offers a fabulous new signature drink called the Boysen Apple Freeze: frozen apple juice with a hint of boysenberry topped with passion fruit foam.

Boysen Apple Freeze Dispenser

I loved the sweet/sour combo of the apple and berry.  This one is going to give Red’s Apple Freeze (aka LeFou’s Brew at Walt Disney World) from the Cozy Cones in Disney California Adventure a run for their money.

Boysen Apple Freeze

The Boysen Apple Freeze comes in a 16 ounce cup (shown above) for $4.69, or you can order it in a souvenir Princess Goblet or Beast Stein for $9.99.  Bottled water is also available for purchase at Maurice’s Treats.

Overall

Overall, I think Maurice’s Treats is a great addition to Disneyland.  It’s a fun themed cart with some tasty new snack options.  I also feel that the price point is very fair for the portion size and quality.  I will definitely be back for more of Maurice’s Treats!

Which twist would you choose? And would you get a Boysen Apple Freeze to go with them? Let us know by leaving a comment!

Thanks for your review but why wouldn’t you wait until you tried the garlic ones again before you wrote the review?

  3. Heather Sievers says:

@Pamela – You are so welcome! Hope you get a chance to try soon!

@Eeyore – Because the cart just opened this week and I wanted to share it right away. Not sure when I will be back to try it again, but when I do, I will update this post.

I can’t wait to renew our passes and give them a try! I think the strawberry would be my favorite! Oh walking again would also be a good thing!

  5. Pamela says:

One last thing Heather, are these always served up warm like churros?

  6. Darlene says:

Great review! I’m glad you warned us about the bagel twist right away. My son will want one of those for sure. As with any warmed bagel, they get hard as they cool. I trust his won’t last that long though :)

I’m excited for the tartness of the Boysen Apple Freeze. Red’s was a little too sweet for me.

  7. Heather Sievers says:

    @Lynne – Renew! Let’s go!

@Pamela – Yes, they are warm, but not quite as warm as a fresh churro. Difference is churros are heated on site. These are made somewhere else and are kept under heat lamps.

@Darlene – Thanks! I can’t wait to go back and try one warm. And you will love the Boysen Apple Freeze. It’s great!

These look great! Can’t wait to try a chocolate twist and maybe the apple freeze!
