Review: Pulled Buffalo Chicken Waffle Sandwich at Animal Kingdom’s Trilo-Bites

Editor’s Note: the Pulled Buffalo Chicken Waffle Sandwich has been replaced by a Buffalo Chicken Waffle Slider. More details on the new offering here.

You know we lurve our waffles here on DFB, and today we’ve got ANOTHER awesome new waffle item to share with you!

Now, Waffle Sandwiches aren’t new to Disney World. At Magic Kingdom’s Sleepy Hollow Refreshments, the featured waffle sandwiches are the Sweet and Spicy Chicken, the Ham, Prosciutto, and Swiss Cheese, and Nutella and Fresh Fruit. Even Epcot got in the game for a while over the holidays with a Sweet Potato Casserole Waffle and a Savory Seasonal Waffle (think Thanksgiving in a waffle!).

But today? Today we’ve got an extra EXTRA special waffle sammy.  We’re heading to Trilo-Bites today for a sometimes-it’s-there-sometimes-it’s-not Waffle Sandwich!

Trilo-Bites in Dinoland previously held the distinction of being THE spot to pick up a Turkey Leg in Animal Kingdom. The menu has shifted, however, to offer sweeter fare: a Warm Waffle with Fresh Strawberries and Cream and a Baked Apple Blossom with Ice Cream (or without) are the menu highlights.

You can also find Milk Shakes, Floats, and a Waffle Bowl Sundae here, too.

(By the way, for those of you wondering, “Well, where do I get my Turkey Leg in Animal Kingdom now?”, you can head over to Flame Tree Barbeque. You’ll see the Turkey Leg listed under the entrees with a side of slaw, but it can also be purchased by itself for $9.79.)

Anyway, on a recent visit to Animal Kingdom, I noticed something special was briefly back on the menu. It’s a little hard to catch since it’s only offered on “peak crowd level” days, so it was great to spot it: the Pulled Buffalo Chicken Waffle Sandwich! Seriously? You ask? YES! I reply!

See, that’s the bonus to visiting the Parks when they’re crowded: MORE FOOD! Shazam!

There was no picture on the menu, so I was happily surprised when I was presented with this (Ooooooh! Aaaaaah!):

The pulled buffalo chicken tops the waffle, of course, but it also sits on a bed of fresh arugula (GREENS!). It’s topped with a super-ample amount of dressing (which I took at a glance to be Ranch, but more on that in a little bit).

The dressing was poured with a heavy hand. As a ranch fan, this didn’t bother me too much (and the pile of chicken is enormous, so it ends up blending in well), but I’m sure you can ask for less if you’d like to try the sammy, but are discouraged by the amount of dressing.

Oh, and it comes with a small bag of apple slices, which I understand are an excellent source of Vitamin C ;) .

What I noticed immediately upon the first bite was how very spicy it was – I mean, VERY. I was expecting some heat, of course, from the Buffalo Sauce, so no real surprise there.

But the level of spice really surprised me. So I tasted each component separately, and realized that a fair bit of the kick was also coming from the dressing.

As it turns out, the dressing on top of the chicken is a blend of ranch, bleu cheese, AND added spice. Since ranch and/or bleu cheese dressings typically serve to cut the spice a bit if you’re eating Buffalo Wings, this caught me off guard.

I found that this is where the waffle really does its thing. It helps to cut the spice so you can enjoy the intense flavor.

The waffle itself turned out really well. Nice and crispy brown on the outside, but still soft overall.

The presence of arugula, additionally, offers a nice lightness in the texture, because this dish is packed seriously thick. I really wanted to go back for that Apple Blossom, but let me tell you, this sandwich is really, really filling.  This one’ll last ya!

While there’s nothing particularly prehistoric about waffles, ice cream, or Baked Apple Blossoms, Trilo-Bites remains a fun stop on your way into or out of DinoLand…

This looks amazing. I am all about buffalo and blue cheese. Pair it with a Safari Amber beer and that’s what I call a good lunch.

Thanks for the review! It’s nice to hear that they didn’t try to dull the Buffalo sauce flavors. My only gripe is with the use of ranch in the dressing. I’m from the Buffalo area and the use of anything but pure bleu cheese on buffalo chicken is pure sacrilege! :)

I’ll take my waffle warm with strawberries. The apple blossom looks good, too. But the pulled chicken waffle sandwich looks too overstuffed, overdressed, and probably too spicy for me. Not that I mind a little spice, but sometimes less is more.

Looks good but I dunno about all the extra spice.
I enjoyed the holiday waffle in Epcot and the Nutella waffle with fruit at Sleepy Hollow but the other Sleepy Hollow sandwiches did not taste very good.
Love waffles but finding a clash with sweet waffles used for savory sandwiches.
The Epcot holiday waffle was a stuffing seasoned waffle so worked better.

If this waffle was more savory, I would be more intrigued. Or even a cornbread style waffle with buffalo chicken perhaps?

Thanks for the review. I would have been tempted to try this, but my insides don’t tolerate spicy anymore. I guess I’ll just have to “settle” for the strawberry one. lol

  6. Essie says

I’m not too sure about it being extra spicy either, but it does look very good and huge! I could never eat all of that; I’d have to ask for a doggy bag andput half of it in my hotel room’s fridge! I do love the sound of mixed ranch and blue cheese. That sounds yummy to me. I’d def try one.

  7. Angelina says

I bet that its really good if you can fit your mouth around it! I guess you’d have to eat it more like an open faced sandwhich?? Lol either way, i would totally try it, though probably end up sharing with the BF :)

  8. Stefanie says

…Would the 2nd week of March be considered a busy time?? I wasn’t planning on going to AK for this short trip but now I’m reconsidering! ;-)

  9. Lynnilou says

That’s the first thing I said – GREENS! And, the rest looks pretty good as well. I love spice and that dressing sounds good too.

I hope I can try this!

  10. Vanessa says

Thanks for the review! We are there in April, this will be on my list to try during our visit. Looks as if its enough for my husband and I to share. Love spicy!

  11. Carter says

Wow! I need this in my life! I might have to stop by there this weekend to give it a try. I’ve had the Spicy Chicken Waffle at Magic Kingdom and it is amazing. I think it looks like way too much dressing for my taste…so might need to ask for that on the side. I’m so glad that Disney is choosing to offer so many new and unique food items. There’s always something new and amazing to try.

  12. Chris says

I need to try this! We are going in May, hope they have it? Is there something close to here that offers something for lunch for a 6 yo?

  13. says

Angela — It is only there during extremely busy days and when they have the ingredients available.

  14. Carter says

ugh, womp womp. Didn’t realize they weren’t offering it during this time. Went over to AK today and was so upset not to find it there! I asked the guy at the counter and he said “Only available during the holidays.” Whatever that means. I guess I’ll just have to keep an eye out for it. I’m a little surprised that Disney has no shortage of over-steroided turkey legs…but when it comes to shredded buffalo chicken to put on top of the waffles, it’s somehow in short supply? Odd

  15. Wendy says

Jeff — there aren’t specific hours at Trilo-Bites, they fluctuate based on the park’s hours that day. I’ve noticed it wrapping up about an hour before the rest of the park closes. Hope that helps a bit!

Chris — you might want to try Restaurantosaurus with your six-year-old, since it’s right in Dinoland. The Kids Meals are served in a Sand Pail with a shovel that they can take to the “Dig Site” after eating. We took my six-year-old niece to the Dig Site after eating there, and she loved it. Hope you luck out with the Buffalo Waffle… it’s only there on high-traffic days, so if you’re around during Memorial Day, you may especially be in luck :)! Have a great trip!

  16. Kwin says

Went to animal kingdom yesterday just for this amazing looking spicy treat…. NO they don’t have it. :((((((

  17. Kendall says

This looks like the best thing I’ve ever seen. I sent this link to my husband and he immediately replied that we WILL be taking a trip to Disney World if for no other reason than to eat this.

  18. Jenn says

I found the elusive buffalo chicken waffle at trilobite’s today (04/01/14). It was great! The review was spot on. It had a spicy kick and the waffle helped cut the spice. I ate it like an open sandwich with a knife and fork. I’m so glad I got to try it!

  19. Bill says

I got one in early November 11/2/15 but I was only served half of what was shown. Maybe the CM did not know how big to make it. I would have liked more! And no apples.

  20. Katie says

According to the menu posted on the Disney World website, it seems that they changed it from a sandwich to a slider and did away with the apple slices.
