“The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Disney!” Pub Grub!

One of my favorite food pastimes when I’m in Walt Disney World is grabbing a table at one of the resort’s fantastic pubs, bars, or lounges, and sitting down with friends for a nice long talk. There’s always so much to catch up on!

Best Thing I Ever Ate At Disney: Pub Grub!

But in addition to the atmosphere and some nice cocktails, I also love Disney watering holes for some truly amazing eats! We are a snacking people here at DFB, so it’s no wonder the delicious pub grub you can find on property is one of our favorite ways to enjoy time with friends.

On this edition of “The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Disney!”, let’s check out some of our favorite Pub Grub!

Once you finish reading — share YOUR favorites in the comments! I love hearing about new things I’ve gotta try!

Cheese Fondue from Territory Lounge

When it comes to snacking, there are few foods in the world that I’d rather have than cheese! And one of my favorite ways to enjoy it is in the form of things being dipped in its melty self!

That’s right — we’re talking Fondue! And some of the best I have ever tasted is on the menu at Territory Lounge in Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.

This rustic, cozy lounge is themed with the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest in mind. And the menu features hearty fare with flavors of the region as well.

But this cheese fondue is my absolute favorite option here! I can never resist getting it. It arrives in its own little cast-iron pot, complete with a flame to keep the cheese nice and warm.

What’s New Around Walt Disney World: February 8, 2014!

Our latest update is (almost) all about sweet treats that have found their way into the World! Read on to find out what new goodies we’ve spied recently…

New Ice Cream Flavor in Morocco

Recently we featured the Chef-Created Ice Cream found at the Juice Bar connected to Spice Road Table in Epcot’s gorgeous Morocco Pavilion.

New Cupcake at BoardWalk Bakery at BoardWalk Inn

A great new seasonal cupcake appeared at BoardWalk Bakery: Dulce de Leche! This one differs from the Dulce de Leche cupcake that was featured in years past at Contempo Café: BoardWalk Bakery’s version features a whipped cream topping sprinkled with crushed pralines (though it’s similar in that there is caramel inside).

News! New Exclusive Magical Dining Experiences Announced for DVC Members

Disney continues its quest to become a destination for fine dining as much as attractions!

DVC Logo

Recently, Disney Vacation Club announced that it will begin offering “Magical Dining Experiences” exclusively for DVC members and their guests. (This sounds a LOT like the Tables in Wonderland events, for those who are members of that discount program.)

Dinners will take place at popular signature restaurants throughout Walt Disney World. The prix-fixe menus are crafted by Disney chefs, and will feature accompanying wine and/or beer pairings. In addition, a culinary specialist will offer a live presentation throughout the dinner.

The events, which can be booked exclusively by DVC Members for themselves and their guests, promise to be intimate, with limited spots available for each dinner.

What’s New Around the World!

What’s new in your favorite Disney World “chomping grounds”? What’s changed? Read on to find out what we’ve checked out recently!

Downtown Disney

The biggest change over the past week has been the addition of The Smokehouse to Downtown Disney’s West Side. This stop for all-things-barbeque features a lovely outdoor seating area and the chance to enjoy live music.

Signs of bigger changes to come can be spotted all over Downtown Disney as the area delves into its transformation to Disney Springs … and when I say “signs,” I mean actual signs.

We’ll be sharing more in a future post, but the artwork all over Downtown Disney give us an idea of what guests can look forward to in the future.

Three Must-Try Disney Pies!

GUESS WHAT!!!! It’s NATIONAL PIE DAY!!!!

Today, in honor of this most momentous occasion, we couldn’t resist sharing with you a few of our very favorites. Whether they inspire you to bake a pie of your own, or plan a trip and let Disney do the baking for you — well, you’re welcome.

1. Peanut Butter, Banana, and Candied Bacon Pie From Boardwalk Bakery

So many truly wonderful things have come out of BoardWalk Bakery since it reopened after a major renovation last year.

While some classics remain, others, like the Cheesecake Brownie, received makeovers as well. But the real story are the amazing newcomers to the menu! One of my favorites, hands down, is the Peanut Butter, Banana, and Candied Bacon Pie.

Peanut Butter, Banana, and Candied Bacon Pie

Peanut Butter, Banana, and Candied Bacon Pie

The tart starts with a Chocolate Short Dough Crust. Peanut Butter is introduced to the party via the Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Filling, which is pie poetry. Because as much as I love rich peanut butter filling, this lighter approach is killer.

This sweet and salty goodness is wrapped up in a Chocolate Glaze. Add to that a little mound of creamy Banana Topping, and a sprinkling of Candied Bacon, and you’ve got a winner!

2. Lobster and Scallop Fisherman’s Pie From the Epcot Food and Wine Festival

Many of the pies that stand out from the crowd at Disney are savory rather than sweet. Case in point: the beloved Lobster and Seafood Fisherman’s Pie from the Ireland Marketplace Booth at the Epcot Food and Wine Festival!

Food Challenge: The 2013 DFB Holiday Cupcake Crawl

I suppose it’s no secret that we love our cupcakes here at Disney Food Blog!

And every year the holiday cupcake creations that crop up all over Disney World remind us exactly why we adore them so much. Last year we started a new tradition with our 2012 DFB Holiday Cupcake Crawl Challenge!

This year we found even more awesome holiday cupcakes, so we’ve decided to bring back the special Holiday Event from last year! Check out some of these unique and gorgeous holiday cupcakes around the Disney World resorts in 2013!

Welcome to the…

Like last year, most of these cupcakes are available as snack credits on the Disney Dining Plan, so stock up those credits, and get ready to roll!

The Beach Club Resort: Cupcakes Required = 1

Starting just outside Epcot’s International Gateway, The Beach Club’s Marketplace is home to a wonderfully sparkling Gingerbread Cupcake that’s guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit!

Gingerbread Cupcake

The first thing to draw your attention is the large sugar crystals that serve as edible glitter among the red and green sprinkles of mini Christmas trees and candy canes. They sit atop a cream cheese frosting that is surprisingly dense. It’s almost like eating a sweetened cream cheese straight out of the container… and you will never hear me complain about that ;)!

The Beach Club's Gingerbread Cupcake

The cake base is more reminiscent of a mild spice cake than a stronger dark gingerbread flavor. I think it is a good balance to the sweetness of all the sugar on top (including the pretty sugar snowflake), but it’s a good thing to know if you’re expecting something different.

Not in the mood for gingerbread? You can grab this Vanilla Cupcake with red and green Minnie and Mickey Toppers for your crawl credit!

Guest Review: Old Faithful Club Concierge Lounge at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

Welcome Guest Reviewer James Armstrong! Today, we get to see the concierge’s food amenities at the Wilderness Lodge in Walt Disney World. Let’s head to the Old Faithful Club!

While recently staying at Wilderness Lodge we had the pleasure of staying on the Concierge level (also known as the Old Faithful Club).

This is an “upgrade” you can purchase for your room when staying at most of the deluxe Disney World hotels. As part of this upgrade (and additional cost), you benefit from a private concierge to help arrange tickets, childcare, transportation, and recreational activities.

You ALSO get some free food in the Club Lounge.

Atmosphere

To get to the concierge level guests need to use their room key in the elevator, which will activate access to the seventh floor.

Old Faithful Club Elevator Key.

From here, you’ll be afforded excellent views of both the Fire Rock Geiser and the lodge itself. It also has the Old Faithful Club Lounge!

Old Faithful Times Guide. Click image for larger version.

Eats

As part of the Concierge experience, access to the Old Faithful Club Lounge is granted. Here, you’ll find all-you-care to eat snacks and drinks. This service will likely not replace all three meals, however it is a convenient stop for in-between snacks or light meals.

Continental Breakfast (7:00am – 10:30am*)
Breakfast was a nice variety of pastries, muffins, bagels, yogurt, fruit, and cereal. The menu was consistent throughout our visit.

Guest Review: Confit Natural Bacon Appetizer at Wilderness Lodge’s Artist Point

Guest Author Paul Kuconis returns with a review of another great dish — the Confit Natural Bacon Appetizer at Artist Point restaurant! Take it away, Paul…

A categorical hidden gem at Walt Disney World is the resort hotel restaurants. Any of us who have traveled on business have always, where possible, shied away from ‘eating in the hotel.’ Expensive and low quality, but convenient, and that’s about it!

Although that is changing in the ‘outside the World’ world, it is the total opposite ‘within the World’, especially evident in the Deluxe Resort Hotel group.

Take for instance Artist Point, nicely tucked away in Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.

Atmosphere

Nothing beats the view of the Lodge as you cruise up the driveway!

Approach to Wilderness Lodge-Impressive!

The only thing that outdoes the exterior view is the lobby. Seven floors of open concept with timber pillars and totem poles present the ‘Wow’ factor. Every time I arrive and hit the lobby I still say ‘Wow”. It just can’t be beat!

You Can’t Beat the View in the Lobby!

Sometimes the activity in the lobby can dissuade folks from eating in one of Disney’s lobby-situated restaurants; and if you are one of those folks you are missing out.

Although reasonably close to Whispering Canyon Cafe, Artist Point is surprisingly quiet and restful.

The walkway to the hostess station and seating area takes you away from the hustle and bustle of activity.

The Weirdest Burgers in Disney World

Yesterday we featured an awesome, interesting Disney burger, and we figured today would be a good day to delve into a few more of these finds!

Over the past few years, it seems like the culinary staff throughout the resort has made it a mission to reinvent the humble hamburger.

Once upon a time, there were rows and rows of nondescript fast food hamburgers. Now, you can find all manner of interesting flavor combos.

Whether you’re planning a vacation as you read, or you’re just looking for some serious burger inspiration, check out our list of some of the most unusual burgers we’ve had at Walt Disney World!

PB&J Burger

Sports fans who love Disney know that the BEST place to catch a game while you’re at the resort is the ESPN Club at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn.

But just as impressive as the myriad of televisions (even in the bathroom!) is the innovative menu of upscale sports bar food. One of the most interesting entrees is the PB&J Burger.

Inside the PB&J Burger at ESPN Club

Yep, that’s correct. Two of the world’s most comforting foods — peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and burgers — create a fusion of flavors like nothing you’ve ever had. And with the salty flavors of Bacon and spicy notes from sliced Jalapenos to add even more interest, there’s a lot going on here!

You’ve got to try it at least once (that’s about all I could take). And be sure to ask for extra napkins!

Battered Burger

Another burger that you’re not likely to see replicated in too many places is the Battered Burger at Cookes of Dublin in Downtown Disney.

News! Update on Disney’s New Rapid Fill Refillable Mug

According to sources, Disney World will soon be bringing the new Disney Rapid Fill Refillable Mug program to Disney resort hotels.

Tested at All-Star Sports Resort a while back, and much like the process currently in use at Disney’s Water Parks, the new system would use an RFID bar code on each mug to give Disney guests access to refills for a pre-purchased period of time. The mug will then deactivate itself at the end of the purchased time frame.

But as of today, it’s looking more and more like the rumors may be true. Although at this time the Rapid Fill Refillable Program has not been confirmed by Disney, we have news today that the fountain machines at some beverage refilling stations at Walt Disney World resorts have been replaced with new machines that resemble those in a demo video by the company ValidFill.

The first set of photos are from the Beach Club Marketplace, where the machines were installed earlier this week.
