Snack Series: Peanut Butter Heaven in Disneyland

EAT ALL THE PEANUT BUTTER! We just shared some of our FAVORITE Disney peanut butter treats a while back…and today we’ve  got a close-up of one of the must-eat goodies on the list. (Apparently this is a de facto Peanut Butter week on DFB!)

You guys know me, and if Disney wants to sell me on a snack or treat (or hamburger) all they need to do is put some of that golden goodness in it. E.G., I dream of No Way Joses when I’m not in the parks.

But on trips to Disneyland, while I’m purchasing my Peanut Butter Sandwich, I’ve always been tempted by another PB treat beckoning to me from beside it.

On my recent trip, I decided to finally try out the Peanut Butter Heaven. Could it possibly be more “heavenly” than the sandwich?!? We shall see…

So first, this thing is enormous. For scale, look at the pic above of the case, and note that those colorful things above the peanut butter heaven and the peanut butter sandwiches are Disney caramel apples. Which we all know are as big as your head.

So with that said, the steep pricetag for a bonbon — a huge bonbon — isn’t all that shocking.

Dining in Disneyland: Making English Toffee at the Candy Palace

The candy kitchen windows are one of my favorite places to hang out. On every single Disney trip, whether it be to Disney California Adventure, Disneyland, or even just a stroll through Downtown Disney passing by Marceline’s I HAVE to peek in the window and see what the candy makers are up to.

On a recent trip to Disneyland, I passed by Candy Palace on Main Street and noticed some adorable candy makers having way too much fun making English Toffee.

The process is a three person job. It all starts with a little rectangular piece of toffee.

Next, it’s dipped in to a bath of melted milk chocolate.

After it has a perfect coating of milk chocolate, the toffee is rolled in chopped almonds.

Dining in Disneyland: Seasonal Pumpkin Spice Brittle

Although it’s only available for a few more days, I wanted to share a fun snack that I came across at the Candy Palace in Disneyland: Pumpkin Spice Brittle.

Dining in Disneyland: The Holiday Specialty Caramel Apple (A.K.A. the Peppermint Beast)

Walking past Marceline’s Confectionery in Downtown Disney, I noticed a new caramel apple on display in the candy kitchen window.

It’s size was enormous compared to the other two on display, and I knew I needed to do some investigating!

On our way out, I decided to grab one to go and conquer this beast at home.

At $12.99, this apple is way expensive, but you can basically feed a whole army with it. AND this is what you will want to do because as I was paying for it, the Cast Member announced to the entire population of Marceline’s, “1400 Calorie Apple Right Here!”

I was like, “Seriously?” And the answer? “Yep.”  A little disgusted with myself, I justified the situation knowing I was going to share it with my family.

The Granny Smith Apple is first dipped in caramel; it is then given a coating of peppermint (YES! PEPPERMINT) chocolate and rolled in a serious amount of red & green M&M’s. After that, it’s drizzled with white chocolate and sprinkled with sparkly sugar crystals.

The official name of this apple is literally “Specialty Holiday Caramel Apple.” A little boring right? Especially since they could call it something fun like “Peppermint Beast…”

Immediately after opening the package I had to do a public service and weigh this thing. It felt really heavy, and I was curious about the actual weight.

2012 Disneyland Candy Cane Dates

Guess what everyone!?! TODAY marks the first day to get your hands on The Handmade Candy Cane: Disneyland’s hottest holiday commodity.

Things are a little different this year!

The biggest news of the season is that Candy Canes will be made in BOTH Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. This means twice the candy cane fun.

Candy Cane making will be alternating between the two parks, as often 4 days a week.

At Disneyland, the Candy Canes will be made at the newly renovated Candy Palace while over at Disney California Adventure, they will be made at Trolley Treats.

How it Works:

Technically you are not supposed to line up before park opening, but guess what people do. When I went for the first time, I was lucky and got there just 30 minutes before park opening. But I talked to someone who was there by 4:00am, which to me is nuts. So basically, it’s your call.

Wristbands may be picked up at park opening. There will be 40 wristbands per batch and three batches per day.  This means that 120 wristbands will be given out at park opening.

The earlier you are there, the earlier your batch. Your wristband will get you ONE candy cane.  If you have people with you, you HAVE to be together as a group. They will not hand you wrist bands for anyone who is not with you.

Your wrist band will have the date and batch time on it. You may pick up your candy cane any time after your batch time. Your wrist band guarantees you your cane, but you must pick it up by 4:00 or it will be sold to someone in the stand by line.

Last year candy canes were going for $12.95; I am not aware if there has been a price increase or not.

ANNNND. Something I found very interesting when I went and checked each day’s park hours… No taking advantage of Early Admission Hours. The Disneyland Resort has purposely left out Early Admission Hours. So basically, the days the Candy Canes are being made at Disneyland, there are zero that have early admission hours. Dining in Disneyland: The New and Improved Candy Palace

After months of being boarded up earlier this year, the walls came down around Disneyland’s iconic candy shop in May. Let’s take a look at the newly remodeled Candy Palace!

The new Candy Palace was carefully designed so that everything looks “edible.” From the gorgeous chandeliers to the tiled floors and even the Exit sign, the interior does look yummy!

Dining in Disneyland: New Mickey Sour Powder Caramel Apple and Goofy Caramel Apple

I’m so excited that the Candy Palace has reopened in Disneyland! The new interior is gorgeous, and to go along with its new look, our favorite talented candy makers have created some fun new treats: The Goofy Caramel Apple & The Mickey Sour Powder Caramel Apple!

While walking around the newly renovated store for the first time, I immediately noticed the new Caramel Apple “Bar” area where you can order refrigerated caramel apples and various drinks (water, soda, juice, milk, and energy drinks). Located in the back of the store where it connects with the Coca Cola Refreshment Corner, this little area is a great addition to the Candy Palace.

After asking around a bit, I learned that these two new caramel apples were debuting specially for the store’s grand reopening. Normally, I wouldn’t thrown down $20 on two caramel apples, but both were just way too intriguing so I broke down. After purchase, my boys and I went right outside to dig into Goofy. We had Mickey packed up to take home and test out the following day!

Battle of the Disney Chocolate-Covered Sandwiches

It was over a year ago that I first shared my chocolate-covered peanut butter sandwich experience here on the Disney Food Blog.

And since enjoying that one-of-a-kind snack, I’ve found that it’s rarely available in Walt Disney World anymore — even though you can find it regularly in Disneyland (when it’s not selling out in the span of a few hours) at Pooh Corner in Critter Country and at the Candy Palace on Main Street. It’s also at the Candy Shop in Disney California Adventure.

What you can still find regularly in Walt Disney World (and in Disneyland) are the the chocolate-covered s’mores, the sister candy to the peanut butter sandwich. They look exactly the same, but inside they’re oh-so-different!

I figured we should highlight both of these and see which one you guys prefer (be sure to vote in the poll at the end of the post!).
