It’s here! I can hardly believe it, but the 2016 Epcot Food and Wine Festival is finally underway!

Food and Wine Tips Graphic 1

The fun officially kicked off on September 14 and runs until November 14. That’s more than eight weeks of savoring all that this special event has to offer! And we had so much fun eating and drinking along the Promenade to discover our Best of the Fest dishes and drinks to recommend!

But of course, you can’t forget the tons of events that take place during the Festival. From Low Cost Events like Culinary Demonstrations and Beverage Seminars to high end Special Events like Party for the Senses, there’s so much to do at every turn. But here’s the catch — nearly all of it comes with a pricetag.

So that, of course, begs the question: how in the World do you plan for the Food Lover Trip of the Year?

We get it! So we’re here for you with some great tips for Budgeting for the Epcot Food and Wine Festival. And if you like what you see, be sure to check out our 2016 DFB Guide to the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, completely updated with everything you can expect to enjoy at this year’s event!

Epcot Food and Wine Festival Tip: Make Your Own Custom DFB Food and Wine Fest Tray!

If you’ve visited the Epcot Food and Wine Festival before, then you know what a hassle it can be to get from Marketplace Booth to a Table (or Trash Can Top or Bench or Wall) without spilling your dishes and drinks.

That’s why one of my best tips for you is to bring your own tray to make the journey easier!

Yep — we know they sell these little jobbies…

But to be honest, that’s just not enough real estate when you’re sampling more than one dish…plus drinks.

Any tray will do, of course. But why not take the opportunity to show your team spirit with a Disney Food Blog Customized Food and Wine Festival Tray?

Epcot Food and Wine Festival Recipe: Shrimp on the Barbie from the Australia Booth

We’re still months away from the 2016 Epcot Food and Wine Festival but it’s always fun to look back at favorite dishes from the past years!

Food and Wine 2015 Info Graphic Square URL

We loved these Shrimp on the Barbie with Pepper Berry Citrus Glaze way back in 2012 and we’ve had a few reader requests for the recipe too!

Now it might be a wee bit cold in your neck of the woods for grilling outside but you can use a grill pan on the stove for this recipe and it’ll be just as delicious! Plus, the pepperberry sauce is delightfully spicy so it’s the perfect dish to whip up on a cold winter day!

We love exotic-sounding dishes that are actually really easy cook, and this Shrimp on the Barbie recipe is right up our alley! The shrimp would make a great, quick appetizer for a dinner party or a spicy side dish with pasta or steak.

Let’s get cooking and throw a few shrimp on the barbie!

But it gets even better… because this year, the Festival has been extended to run 62 days. It won’t wrap up until November 14th. That means TWO FULL MONTHS of the Food and Wine Festival! (NOTE: The festival usually begins on a Friday, so the fact that it’s starting on a Wednesday this year is…weird. Stay tuned to DFB just in case they change their tune and start it on the 16th instead!) [Read more…]

Disney Holiday Recipe: Pumpkin Mousse Trifle with Cranberries and Apricot-Orange Sauce

When it comes to holiday dessert, the more pies the better we say!

Of course, as much as we love pie, it’s always fun to bring a new dessert to the table – especially at the holidays! And today we have the perfect holiday dessert to share with you.

This Pumpkin Mousse Trifle with Cranberries and Apricot Orange Sauce was featured at the Epcot Food and Wine Festival a few years ago, and we really enjoyed it.

The recipe has a few steps, but it’s worth a little extra time in the kitchen!

Pumpkin Mousse Trifle with Cranberries and Apricot Orange Sauce

Serves 6 to 8

Struesel

1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons old-fashioned oats
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
5 tablespoons butter, melted

Apricot-Orange Sauce
1/2 cup apricot jam
1/4 cup orange juice

Pumpkin Mousse
1 egg yolk or 1/4 cup pasteurized egg yolks
3/4 cup canned pumpkin pie filling
3/4 cup white chocolate chips
1 cup heavy cream

Other ingredients:
Store-bought spice cake mix, prepared per package directions and cooled.
1/2 cup Ocean Spray Craisins

Instructions

For Streusel:

1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Line a sheet pan with foil and set aside.

2. Combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and sugar in a medium bowl. Add melted butter and stir until mixture is crumbly.

3. Pour onto prepared sheet pan and bake 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

4. Set aside to cool. Crumble into small pieces.

For Orange Sauce:

Combine apricot jam and orange juice in a medium bowl. Whisk together until smooth.

For Pumpkin Mousse:

1. Whisk egg yolk into pumpkin pie filling. Melt white chocolate chips in microwave or using a double boiler. Whisk melted chocolate chips into the pumpkin mixture.

2. Whip heavy cream to medium peaks. Gently fold whipped cream into pumpkin mixture.

To serve:

1. Cut spice cake into cubes. Place a dollop of mousse at the bottom of a serving dish. Top with cranberries and a drizzle of sauce.

2. Place a few cubes of cake over the mousse. Top with another layer of mousse, cranberries and sauce, then top with streusel.

This sounds like a great addition to your holiday meal! Will you be making this pumpkin mousse this holiday season? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think!

Sample Epcot Food and Wine Festival Menu Items BEFORE the Festival!

We know, we know… we talk about the 2015 Epcot Food and Wine Festival a lot around here. Like, a LOT, a lot.

And can you blame us? It’s our favorite time of year, and we can’t wait to dig into all the new flavors like Brazil’s Layered Meat Pie with Mashed Yucca (as well as some of our old standbys — I’m looking at you, Canadian Cheddar Cheese Soup) at the Festival Marketplace Booths this year.

But let’s say your Disney World travel dates fall outside of the Festival dates of September 25 – November 16th. What’s a Disney food fan to do?

I’ll tell you what… You can try a few Food and Wine Festival offerings in spots around Epcot and Downtown Disney right now. Follow me!

We’re starting at Epcot’s Refreshment Cool Post, tucked between the China Pavilion and the walkway to Germany.

You may have passed the Refreshment Coolpost a bajillion-and-one times on your jaunts around World Showcase without thinking much of it. Kid-friendly fare is the primary focus, with the main offerings of hot dogs and frozen yogurt (for a time it was a super yummy pineapple) providing options for picky eaters far away from the American Adventure Pavilion. Even if you have walked right on by, you may still be familiar with the nearly constant sound of drums being played by the congregating kiddos! This great pic features treats from Pineapple Promenade at this year’s Flower and Garden Festival. It really captures the contrast between the soft serve and the Sammy’s Beach Bar Red Head Macadamia Nut Flavored Rum!
