Review: Les Chefs De France in Epcot’s France Pavilion

We are enjoying a leisurely lunch today at Les Chefs de France, the table service restaurant in Epcot’s France Pavilion.

This iconic eatery has been the location of many happy meals and memories for me through the years. But as with other Disney spots, it’s always good to check in occasionally. Disney restaurants can be wildly inconsistent; a place that’s spot-on during one meal can go south the next time you visit. So I always make it a priority to check back in at all of Disney restaurants to see if they’ve gotten better or worse, and to show you what they’re serving up lately. You get to choose if they’re worth your time and money.

Let’s go. :-)

I have very early memories of this restaurant. When you walk by at night, it just looks so cozy inside! And it’s honestly beautiful any time of day.

Little has changed here since the restaurant first opened when the park did. But that’s ok. Because the whole point here is to look like a classic French bistro that you’d find in Paris. And it really, really fits the bill. [Read more…]

Review: Lemon with Crispy Meringue Ice Cream at L’Artisan des Glaces in Epcot’s France

We have an almost-birthday to celebrate… L’Artisan des Glaces is nearly two years old!

L’Artisan des Glaces opened in late May of 2013 and has been serving up 16 daily flavors of house made ice cream and sorbet ever since. Oh, and more than a few Cafe Glaces and Pressed Brioche and Macaron Ice Cream Sandwiches. Not to mention an Ice Cream Martini or two…

You may be dedicated to your favorite flavor or enjoy trying something new each time, such as the ever-changing seasonal macaron sandwiches.

Me? I’ve just gotta try their newest flavor whenever I’m in Epcot’s France, because they never seem to disappoint with the latest ice cream creation.

The most recent addition of Lemon with Crispy Meringue Ice Cream presented a bit of a conundrum for me, though (even if I can never argue with an Ice Cream Mickey!).

If you’ve been reading the DFB for a while, then you probably know how much I seriously love all things lemon, so I was pretty pumped about the lemon ice cream. On the flip side, you may also know that I don’t care for [Read more…]

Review: Parfait aux Fruits and Duo Mousse Cake at Epcot’s Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie

It’s become one of my life goals to eat my way through the entire bakery case at Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie in Epcot’s France Pavilion.

And why not? This place rarely churns out a dud, even though the selection is HUGE.

Now, I do have to say, I’m quite partial to my favorites: for example, the Frangipane (puff pastry with an almond filling), which I’ve adored ever since I tried it at the Food and Wine Festival’s Parisian Breakfast last  year, and the Brix aux Pommes, which has become a more recent favorite of mine.

So sometimes it’s hard to switch gears and choose beyond those. But a goal is a goal and I aim to do my readers proud! To that end, I’d like to show you a few other staples in that bakery case that I haven’t previously showcased on the blog.

Welcome back to Les Halles!

While there are plenty of savory options at Les Halles (it’s a great spot to grab soup and a sandwich), today we’re focusing on the sweet stuff. Let’s check out a few more French goodies tucked inside!

In fact, the treats we’re checking out today are displayed side by side in there, even though they are quite different from each other. We’re trying the Parfaits aux Fruits and a little something by the name of “Duo.”

First up, the oddly titled “Duo.” Initial impression? It’s gorgeous. A smooth chocolate dome reflects the light in the bakery case and catches your eye immediately.

Review: Café Liégeois at Les Halles in Epcot’s France Pavilion

When you’re visiting Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie in Epcot’s France Pavilion, it’s easy to become overwhelmed with the huge array of choices and just stick with what you know. (In the case of the frangipane, I forgive you.)

Now, maybe you’ve been tempted to step outside the box, but just haven’t known enough about the other options to trust that it would be a good use of your snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan or your dining dollars.

Well, that’s why you have us! Today we’re going to demystify one of those lesser-known items: the Café Liégeois!

Cafe Liegeois

You’ll spot the Café Liégeois among the soft desserts in the bakery case near items like Chocolate Mousse and Fruit Parfaits.

My understanding is that while a Café Liégeois is traditionally an ice cream treat, the Les Halles take is a coffee and cream mousse, which offers the full coffee-flavor experience in three layers.

Taking it from the top, the white layer is an airy sweet cream, and reminds me of the flavored coffee creamers that you can buy in the store (and thank goodness for those — they are what get me through the morning!).

The second, dark layer is an intense espresso flavor for the serious coffee connoisseur, and the most dense in texture of the three.

Review: The New Napoleon at Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie in Epcot’s France

You’ll never hear us deny it: we’re fans of just about every treat that comes out of Epcot’s France Pavilion.

As it turns out, so are lots of other people! So much so, in fact, that the well-loved Boulangerie Patisserie outgrew it’s original small space and reopened in early 2013 to better accommodate more guestsand more treats! (The original space, by the way, is now home to L’Artisan des Glaces.) Additionally, a large indoor seating area was added even while the charming outdoor seating remained.

When the Patisserie reopened in it’s new space as Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie, we were so excited to see (and even more thrilled to taste) all the goodness this spot had to offer.

Les Halles

By and large, reactions to the offerings – from sweet to savory – were positive. Many favorites from the old Patisserie made it over to the new, and the expanded options were varied, impressive, and flavorful.

One alteration, however, that displeased some guests was a change to a much-loved pastry: the Napoleon. It had been updated with the reopening to provide a more authentic French culinary experience. Upon learning that people were unhappy with the change, the chefs in the France Pavilion recently made an update…to the update :) !

And here is the result:

Review: Jambon Beurre Sandwich from Les Halles in Epcot’s France

OK, so when I was living in Switzerland, one of my go-to meals was a baguette with butter and ham from the local patisserie. It was just awesome in its simplicity and fresh ingredients. And cheap, to boot!

So I was excited to see the Jambon Buerre — which basically means ham and butter — baguette keep its spot at the new Boulangerie Patisserie Les Halles in Epcot’s France Pavilion.

Les Halles Boulangerie et Patisserie in Epcot's France Pavilion

The pastries and bakery items available in the France Pavilion have been some of the most beloved food items of Disney fans for a loooooong time. Earlier this year, when the original (tiny!) Patisserie Boulangerie was replaced with an expanded space, reviews were mixed.

Most people were happy to see the addition of indoor seating and a more accessible space as well as an expanded menu. But others have decried the price increases and changes to beloved pastries.

Les Halles Ordering Area

We’ve sampled many of the offerings here in our previous review. Today, we’re stopping to see if the new counter service spot is still faithful to one of my favorite French on-the-go meals.

Jambon Beurre at Les Halles

Walk through the gift shop and past the small seating area to get to the heart of Les Halles. There, you’ll find a square room with cordoned lines in the middle. The food cases line three sides of the space, and a dozen or so cast members await the chance to help you make your selections.

Les Halles Ordering Area and Seating

Electronic menus on flatscreens above the cases show you what’s available. I love the menus here, and how everything is in French with the English translation off to the side. It’s a great way to brush up on your grammar while you wait!

Keep in mind that other boards list pastry specialties and drink options. This board lists only the savory, “meal-type” options.
