Review: New Cannoli Cupcake at the Gelato Kiosk in Epcot’s Italy Pavilion

Cupcakes at the Gelato Kiosk“Huh?”

That’s what I said when I saw the new Cannoli Cupcake on the menu at the Gelato stand located in Epcot’s Italy.

This simple kiosk (located on your left when coming from Germany, just before entering the heart of the Italy Pavilion), is covered with a pastel-hued awning with nary a sign other than the menu to encourage your visit.

But it’s home to some downright impressive — and highly overlooked — items, especially when it comes to its “Gelato Creations,” like the Coppa Delizia and Espresso Affogato. So anytime I notice anything new on the menu here, it’s an automatic must-try for me.

When I read the name “Cannoli Cupcake,” my thoughts first went to the Tiramisu Cupcake at Captain Cook’s. You know, your regular cupcake incorporating the basic flavors of a classic Italian dessert.

Review: Roule Lard et Fromage (Bacon and Cheese Roll) at Epcot’s Les Halles

You know, there are few better ways — especially while Soarin’ is undergoing refurb ;) — to start a day at Epcot than a visit to Les Halles Boulangerie Patisserie in Epcot’s France Pavilion.

Even though we talk about Les Halles a lot here on the DFB (it’s one of our Favorite Epcot Restaurants, after all), it still comes as a surprise to lots of guests that you can indeed start your day at Epcot here.

Unique among World Showcase counter service eateries, Les Halles opens at 9:00 am, whereas the rest open along with World Showcase at 11:00AM daily. (Future World spots like Fountain View and Sunshine Seasons are the places you can find breakfast items upon Epcot’s typical 9:00AM opening).

Now, you may think it’s all sweet treats at Les Halles, and if you want to start your day with Mousse au Chocolat, a Napoleon, or even a coffee-infused Café Liégeois, then have at it — you’re on vacation!

But there is a savory little gem we’d like to bring to your attention today, if you haven’t yet sampled this Les Halles staple for yourself: it’s the Roule Lard et Fromage. [Read more…]

Review: Astronaut Ice Cream Sandwich from Mission Space Cargo Bay in Epcot

Review: House-made Salt and Vinegar Chips at the Rose & Crown Beer Stand in Epcot

AJ’s Note: If you’re concerned about the chips vs. crisps situation in this review, please see my note in the comments. Love you!

Do you know what the Rose & Crown Beer Stand in Epcot’s United Kingdom serves?

Okay, you got me… BEER! ;) But guess what else it just started serving up recently? Potato Chips.

But not just any old potato chips… we’re talking about Disney House-made Chips! You may already be familiar with these goodies that are often served as a side for dishes like the Anchors Aweigh and Lighthouse Sandwiches at Columbia Harbour House, and the Lobster Club Sandwich at The Artist’s Palette.

That’s just a small sampling, of course. You can find House-made Chips in several locations around Disney World, but often solely as a side to an entree and rarely sold separately on the menu (though you can probably ask for them as a separately served side). No matter where you find them, the fresh quality and natural flavor often help the chips stand out as much as the entree they’re served alongside. So it was great to see these available at the Rose & Crown Beer Stand in TWO flavor options: Original and Salt & Vinegar.

You’ll receive a bag like this for $4.25 out of pocket or as a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan

I grabbed the Salt & Vinegar because the flavor is unique to this location… and I was in the United Kingdom, after all! [Read more…]

Guest Review: Orange Cupcake at Sunshine Seasons in Epcot

We’re welcoming back DFB Guest Author and good friend Joey Beyer with a guest review of the Orange Cupcake at Sunshine Seasons in Epcot’s Future World! Since we’re big fans of Disney Cupcakes, we can’t wait to show you this one!

Hello everyone! I am very excited to introduce the new Orange Cupcake that has popped up at Epcot’s Sunshine Seasons. This cupcake can be found in the self-service cabinet adjacent to the dessert counter at Sunshine Seasons, so you can just grab your favorite!

I am a huge fan of the Sunshine Seasons, as it always has a great selection of foods and unique seasonal options. (And by the way — for those of you that are fans of the Warm Peanut Butter Brownie at Sunshine Seasons, there is no need to worry. As of 9/7/15 it was still available as the “Seasonal Dessert” at Sunshine Seasons.)

As you can see, the cupcake is topped with a gummy orange candy and orange frosting.

The frosting is the standard Disney buttercream frosting and has a hint of orange flavor! The frosting is also topped with large granules of sugar. [Read more…]

News: Peaches and Cream Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich Debuts at L’artisan des Glaces in Epcot’s France Pavilion

More seasonal creations out of of L’Artisan des Glaces in Epcot’s France!

You know the drill… just think of the Pumpkin SpicePeppermint, and Strawberries and Cream Macaron Ice Cream Sandwiches (not to mention the red, white, and blue version of the Vanilla Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich that makes its way around in time for Bastille Day in July) that ring in the flavors — and even colors — of the corresponding holiday or season.

And with (technically) two months of summer left, it’s a great time to enjoy the new Peaches & Cream Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich that just hit the scene.

Review: Troll Horn and Rice Cream at Kringla Bakeri og Kafe in Epcot’s Norway

You know how I love finding out about new eats and treats all over Disney World and Disneyland, right?

Well, I can tell you it has been keeping me pretty busy lately! We’re talking Caramel Sticks in Disneyland’s Candy Palace, and Baked Lobster Mac and Cheese at the Beastly Kiosk in Disney’s Animal Kingdom (oh, and umm… poop candy at the new Zuri’s Sweets Shop, while we’re at it). We’ve got two new flavors of ice cream over at L’Artisan des Glaces, and… the list goes on and on!

And it’s super fun — it really is. But eating NEW things all the time means that I never have time — or stomach space — for my old favorites. Well, today I wanted to re-try two of my favorite snacks over at Kringla Bakeri og Kafe in Norway’s Epcot. After all, they’ve both gone through some changes since we last reviewed them, so they ARE technically “new” in some ways!

Review: Caramel and Pecan Treats at Karamell-Küche in Epcot’s Germany

What’s a walk around World Showcase these days without stopping in Germany’s Karamell-Küche?

After all, it’s the one place where every single item is built around the same awesome ingredient: caramel. Werther’s Caramel, to be specific.

In fact, you can even take a moment or two to check out the wall to your left upon entering the Caramel Kitchen (once you’re past the window, that is). It’s a mural depicting the timeline of the company, which had its start in the German village of Werther. It’s quite the history lesson.

Of course, you probably won’t.

Because if you’re anything like me, you’re going to be entirely distracted by all the choices held inside the bakery case (not to mention the buttery fragrance of caramel wafting through the air)!

Karamell-Kuche bakery case

Karamell-Kuche bakery case

That bakery case full of caramel goodness is one reason I don’t mind the typically long lines here. It gives me more time to peek over shoulders and heads in front of me to decide what I want. It takes some time! But having sampled just about everything in that case (and some more than a few times — I’m lookin’ at you, Chewy Caramel Shortbread Bar), I decided to go with something I hadn’t tried before.

Or two things, because… well, do you really need a reason why here ;)?

Anyway, one item I hadn’t chosen previously was the Caramel Cluster Milk Chocolate Pecan; which, I’m guessing, should probably be called the Milk Chocolate Pecan Caramel Cluster…but that’s just splitting hairs.

Caramel Cluster Milk Chocolate Pecans

At first glance, you think you have it pretty much figured out: a dollop of hardened milk chocolate over a layer of caramel covering the pecans. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing…

Review: Lemon with Crispy Meringue Ice Cream at L’Artisan des Glaces in Epcot’s France

We have an almost-birthday to celebrate… L’Artisan des Glaces is nearly two years old!

L’Artisan des Glaces opened in late May of 2013 and has been serving up 16 daily flavors of house made ice cream and sorbet ever since. Oh, and more than a few Cafe Glaces and Pressed Brioche and Macaron Ice Cream Sandwiches. Not to mention an Ice Cream Martini or two…

You may be dedicated to your favorite flavor or enjoy trying something new each time, such as the ever-changing seasonal macaron sandwiches.

Me? I’ve just gotta try their newest flavor whenever I’m in Epcot’s France, because they never seem to disappoint with the latest ice cream creation.

The most recent addition of Lemon with Crispy Meringue Ice Cream presented a bit of a conundrum for me, though (even if I can never argue with an Ice Cream Mickey!).

If you’ve been reading the DFB for a while, then you probably know how much I seriously love all things lemon, so I was pretty pumped about the lemon ice cream. On the flip side, you may also know that I don’t care for [Read more…]

Review: Snacks from the Canada Pavilion in Disney World’s Epcot

Greetings from Epcot! It’s time to see what we can find in some of the shops the World Showcase!

Epcot!!!

Epcot!!!

While you can bet on always finding some favorites, like Pocky in Japan, other spots like to change things up regularly.

I always love to check out the little bank of shops in Canada. In the past, we’ve discovered some awesome chip varieties. And last year, I was thrilled to tell you (and AJ’s Dad!) about the different Tim Horton beverages they’re now featuring.

Today, let’s check out some grab and go sweets from North of the Border!

Grab and Go Snacks from the Canada Pavilion in Epcot

If you’re in need of a chocolate fix, consider the Rochef Chocolate Bars. From Quebec, they were available in a couple of different varieties the day I visited. I skipped this one due to the melt factor that day!

Next, I found two different sweet popcorn snacks. First, I spied Jakeman’s Maple Popcorn. You’ll often find Maple-flavored snacks in the Canada pavilion, but this was new to me.

Jakeman's Maple Popcorn

Jakeman’s Maple Popcorn

True, you’re getting a pre-packaged snack that’s been in that bag for an undisclosed amount of time. So if you value something made fresh and on the spot, high tail it over to Karamell-Küche for their version of caramel popcorn.

But if maple is your thing, give this fluffy popcorn a try. The subtle maple flavor makes this variety stand out from the sea of “just sweet tasting” caramel popcorn that’s out there.

If you prefer your popcorn alongside other stuff, then you’ll want to check out Moose Munch. Or should I say Moose Munches — because you have choices! Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate varieties are on offer.

Okay, okay, so let’s cover the obvious first. Moose Munch is the brain child of gourmet food company Harry & David. And so, it is not technically (not even a little bit) Canadian.

So why’s it here? I’m guessing 1) there’s a moose on the package; and 2) it’s delicious. That’s all I can come up with. So we’ll have to suspend our attachment to authenticity with this one.

I decided I had to try some Moose Munch for myself, and I opted for the Milk Chocolate version.

Do not mistake the desiccate packet for seasoning. I don’t think it brings much flavor to the party. ;-) It’s just there to keep everything from clumping together, of course. Seems obvious, but this is a warning to not let your kiddos just stick their hands into the bag and take a big mouthful. KIDS! ALWAYS REMOVE THE NOT REALLY FOOD PARTS OF YOUR SNACK BEFORE EATING.
