Yep — here at DFB, we always like to kick off each new year with some of our favorite treats spotted during the last few months. But when I sat down to brainstorm this post…well, at first it seemed like 2014 didn’t offer a whole lot of new stuff.

That said, when I started scrolling back through everything we ate this past year, I realized there was a lot to be said for 2014 and its culinary prowess.

There is one really big difference between this year and previous years, however. Most of our crave-worthy dishes are savory this time around! I know! WUT?!??!?!?!?!? Don’t worry, though — I’ve got a few sweeties thrown in.

We thought that Mac and Cheese, that king of comfort foods, was enough. But little did we know what we had been missing, until Disney started putting additional delicious food on top of its cheesy goodness.

We first saw the dawn of Gourmet Mac and Cheese — we’re just gonna call it that if that’s all right with you — a while back. Friar’s Nook introduced the concept, and we were smitten with their Bacon Cheeseburger Mac and Cheese and Blue Cheese Mac right away.

News! And Review: Waffle Fry Menu Debuts at Magic Kingdom’s Golden Oak Outpost

The next time you’re stepping into the Wild West of Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland, you simply MUST mosey on up to Golden Oak Outpost.

Not exactly what you’d expect to hear, I know, seeing as the Outpost typically featured a fairly simple menu of items like Chicken Sandwiches, Chicken Breast Nuggets, and fries made to feed hungry cowpokes who don’t feel like facing the lines at Pecos Bill’s.

But not anymore! Golden Oak Outpost just received yet another menu revamp.

They’ve introduced not two, not three, but FOUR variations of over-the-top, loaded-up Waffle Fries! We tried them ALL. And one of them is awfully close to the Figaro Fries of yore…

BLT Waffle Fries

We’re starting with the BLT Waffle Fries. Just like the sandwich it’s named after, you’re looking at bacon, lettuce, and tomato, with the addition of Ranch dressing.

You can barely spy a fry at first for all that BACON!! And this is the good stuff – nice and crispy. None of that wimpy, soggy bacon here. The ample amount of Ranch dressing oozes nicely over the whole batch, and the lettuce and tomato add variation to the texture.

And, yes, as you can now tell, there are indeed waffle fries underneath it all, ready to fulfill their yummy, starchy, potato-y destiny!

So. ARE these Figaro Fries given a second life?! Not exactly. No cheese here. And, obviously, these are waffle fries as opposed to regular. But it’s as close as we’re gonna get for now, and I — for one — will take it!

What is Your Most-Missed Extinct Disney Food?

We’ve been talking a lot about new restaurants and new menu items these past few weeks, but for many Disney food fans the long-lost favorites really stick in their memories.

I decided that we need to pay tribute to some of these famous dishes and want to find out: What are your most-missed extinct Disney dishes? I’ll start the ball rolling with a few of my own!

Fried Boursin Cheese at 50’s Prime Time Cafe

This is, no doubt, my most missed dish in a Disney restaurant. While it’s meant to be shared, you know I ordered one all for myself when I visited 50’s Prime Time Cafe in Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

This is basically herb cheese spread that’s fried and served with fruit and bread crisps. Pretty standard, eh? But that warm, creamy cheese coupled with the sweet fresh fruit was the perfect starter!

Maui Scalloped Potatoes at ‘Ohana

There have been several appetizer changes at ‘Ohana in the past several years, but the most devastating has to be the switch from scalloped potatoes to noodles. (You can read the whole, sad story here…in fact, please do, because I’m uncharacteristically funny in that blog post and it will change your whole perception of me, I promise.)

RIP Figaro Fries

Well, it’s happened. Sold for so many years at Magic Kingdom’s Pinocchio’s Village Haus, topped expertly with cheese, lettuce, ranch dressing, and tomatoes and desired by many, Figaro Fries lived a good life.

It was touch-and-go there at the end. Even after they were discontinued from the menu, Figaro Fries held on, coming back again and again for limited times. However, it seems as though this time, our delicious friends are gone for good.

Now, I know we could take this time to mourn, but instead, let’s be thankful for what we still have. (One thing we’ve learned about Disney restaurants is that they’re always changing; as Pocahontas says — you can’t step in the same river twice (that was her, right?).) So let’s take today to celebrate our crispy, salty, oily, and cheesy cravings for french fries by honoring what we’ve got left!
