Disney Food Pics of the Week: More Disney Waffles!

We’re back with another crave-inducing installment of Disney Food Pics of the Week!

We all love waffles at Disney, right? I mean, there’s nothing better than digging into a Mickey Waffle for breakfast. :-)

Mickey Waffle!

But did you know, there’s a TON of really interesting other waffles at Disney!

Today, we’re bringing you more of your pics, courtesy of our Flickr page, Disney Food Blog Photo Extravaganza! From snacks to sandwiches to Food and Wine Festival desserts, let’s take a look at your fantastic food finds!

Belgian Waffle with Berry Compote

Say it with me: It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year! Yep — we’re talking about Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival!

Last year, the Belgium Marketplace Booth capitalized on the popularity of their dessert waffles by offering a savory version! But the sweets, like the Belgian Waffle with Berry Compote, are always a good choice!

Holiday Eats! Epcot Celebrates Holidays Around The World

Epcot’s Holidays Around the World offers guests the opportunity to experience holiday traditions from around the globe through music, stories, and (our favorite) cuisine!

So, grab your passport… (yup — they have passports this year!)

Holidays Around the World Passport

…because we’re about to take a trip around the world! Epcot’s World Showcase, that is!

First things first: be sure to pick up a Guide Map at Epcot’s entrance for this experience.

Even if you know your way around Epcot, this map — unique to the festivities – shows you which treats are available and where you can find them (it provides times for special holiday performances as well).

Mexico

Let’s take it one country at a time, starting in Mexico, where La Cantina de San Angel is serving Sweet Tamales!

Sweet Tamale

While the corn-based dough in this dish isn’t at all sugary (with just the slightest hint of cinammon spice), the strawberry glaze on top delivers a nice bit of sweetness. The filling is tangy, with a guava puree (and I believe a hint of pineapple, as well).

Now, before we hit the rest of the countries in World Showcase, Promenade Refreshments is offering a few treats exclusive to the holidays, too!

We’ll be back soon with a full review of both waffles and some of that peanut butter hot cocoa, but here’s a pic of the Savory Waffle to whet your whistle!

Disney Food Pics of the Week: Disney Pretzels!

We are back with another installment of Disney Food Pics of the Week! It’s so much fun to pop in on the Disney Food Blog Photo Extravaganza, our Flickr group, and see what you guys have posted!

Today, I found some awesome pics over there of one of my favorite snack foods — Pretzels! But not just any pretzels…Disney Pretzels!

We all have our favorites — made from scratch soft pretzels in Epcot’s Germany Pavilion…sweet cream cheese or jalapeno cheese stuffed (awesomeness!)…or those killer pretzel breadsticks at Le Cellier!

There’s no shortage of interesting pretzel versions in the ‘Land and the ‘World, but wait til you see these! You’ll have a couple of brand new pretzel treats to add to your list for sure!

Mickey Pretzel

So many choices…but I couldn’t resist starting with one of my favorites, the Mickey-Shaped Pretzel! Available now on both coasts, seeing that cute/creepy little face rendered in puffy soft pretzel dough just makes me smile every. Single. Time.

The Disney Food Blog Bingo Challenge!

Guest Author Katie Roth took on the Disney Food Blog Bingo Challenge. Are you game? Let’s play!

A few weeks before my recent trip to Disney World, the Disney Parks Blog posted an article on a fun new way to experience the Disney parks: Bingo!

When I read this article, I immediately wanted there to be a Disney food version which prompted me to contact AJ at the Disney Food Blog.

Magic Kingdom DFB Bingo Card.

She developed a card for each park and I was lucky enough to be the beta tester! :) For this trip, we attempted the Magic Kingdom and Epcot food bingo cards.

Magic Kingdom Disney Food Bingo Card

The first card that we attempted to complete was for the Magic Kingdom. I absolutely LURVE Magic Kingdom food, so I knew this card would be a cinch to complete.

Our first treat was a Root Beer Dole Whip Float at Aloha Isle. It was in the high 80s with a packed park, so this cold and refreshing treat was welcomed.

While I love anything Dole Whip, and even though we got vanilla Dole Whip, I thought that the root beer actually didn’t taste the best with it …perhaps because it wasn’t the creamy, real vanilla ice cream that I’m used to? Maybe it was an off-day? Either way, I’ll probably need to get another one just to be sure. ;)

Root Beer Dole Whip Float.

Float!

As optimistic as I was that we would finish the Magic Kingdom bingo card, I am saddened and embarrassed to admit that we did not. :(

We got as far as the float and a popcorn and then threw our hands up in defeat – the Memorial Day crowds and our Advance Dining Reservation (ADR) just proved too much for us on top of attempting two bingo cards. We were, however, much more successful with the Epcot card.

The Troll Horn Conundrum

At her urging, I recently made a visit to one of DisneyFoodBlog guru AJ’s favorite spots, Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe in Epcot’s Norway pavilion.

While I LOVE the Maelstrom ride in Norway (“Those who seek the spirit of Norway face peril and adventure!”), I must confess that I rarely stop into Kringla when I’m at the pavilion. Depending on which way I’m traveling, my hands are usually already occupied by a margarita from Mexico or a bag of caramel popcorn from Germany.

AJ’s motivation for having me visit Kringla Bakeri was to investigate the mystery of the disappearing Cloudberry Horn. She had heard (gasp!) they were off the menu.

The Cloudberry Horn is one of those Disney cult classic items that a squadron of devotees defend with zeal. MUST HAVE CLOUDBERRIES! (Say that with a troll voice and you’ll tremble slightly.)

Indeed, when I got to the pastry counter I found that there were no “Cloudberry Horns,” but instead there were Troll Horns available. (Do trolls even have horns?)

This troll has no horn, or maybe she chopped it off :-)

The menu lists Troll Horns for $3.89, same price that the Cloudberry Horns had been.

And look, those cone-shaped sweets are labeled “Troll Horns” in the case.

Upon closer inspection of both a horn and the menu, the difference between a Troll Horn and a Cloudberry Horn is the flavor of [Read more…]

Snack Series: The Berry Cream Puff at Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe

One place that I never tire of is Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion.

This charming spot, located to the left as you make your way back through the pavilion, is home to wonderful surprises. You all know my passionate love for the not-too-sweet, just-perfect schoolbread!

But it’s just the beginning of the awesome you’ll find in this tiny bakery. With rice cream, the traditional lefse (OK, I don’t think it’s that awesome, but a lot of you do!), and jam-filled waffles, there’s no shortage of fabulous desserts.

And wait! We can’t forget the crazy cute new Viking mousse, or the Aquavit shots (woah Nellie!)!

And today, we’re returning to Kringla to check out another gorgeous little pastry…

Berry Cream Puff Pastry at Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe

The first thing you need to know about this one is that it’s enormous. Well, at least as far as cream puffs are normally concerned. Seriously. It’s as big as the schoolbread, just to give you a comparison.

Snack Series: NEW Viking Mousse from Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe in Epcot’s Norway

It’s about time to check in at Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe and see what’s new!

The quaint little bakery and sandwich shop may be small in size. (Seriously. Tiny.) But it’s big on offerings!

In fact, it features some of the most unique and beloved treats in all of Disney World for many guests.

In addition to some fantastic sandwiches, there are some pastries here that have achieved Disney Food Blog legendary distinction…

Step Into Norway's Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe For Some Delicious Treats!

We’ve talked extensively about how awesome that creamy, custardy, coconutty schoolbread is here. And you can’t forget the rice cream, jam filled waffles, and lefse.

New! Viking Mousse

But recently, I stopped into the shop to see what was new (updating our Disney Food Blog Guide to Epcot Snacks, of course!), and a different treat caught my eye.

And how could it not? I mean, look at the awesomeness that is Viking Mousse.

There was no way I could walk away from this. C’mon, people. It has HORNS! I couldn’t wait to bust inside and check it out.

And in truth, this is actually a fairly simple dessert: a chocolate mousse dome, twin tuile cookie horns, and a garnish of toasted coconut.

Food Challenge: The Disney Food Blog Waffle Crawl

It’s been a while since we’ve had a good Disney Food Crawl around here, don’t cha think? Let’s take care of that right now!

My friends, gather ’round — for we are about to carb load like never before!

Introducing…

The Disney Food Blog Waffle Crawl!

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Waffles are just for breakfast. But you’d be only half right! There’s plenty of waffle-ness to be had at all hours of the day throughout Walt Disney World, believe it or not.

But since this one is definitely going to challenge your stamina, I heartily recommend you plan to cover two days with this one, and enlist the help of some able-bodied and empty-stomached friends. Sharing will be beneficial! ;-)

So what are you waiting for? Grab your butter and syrup and let’s go!

Sleepy Hollow Waffle Sandwiches

We’re starting at the Magic Kingdom first, since some of our favorite waffles can be found here!

When I’m looking for a treat at Disney World’s very first park, it’s pretty hard to imagine finding anything as rockin’ as a waffle from Sleepy Hollow Refreshments. And of all the amazing choices available, the Nutella and Fresh Fruit Waffle usually wins out with me!

Nutella Waffle Sandwich With Fruit

A fresh-from-the-iron waffle, malty and thick and still warm, is slathered with Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread. Then it’s heaped high with a mix of fresh bananas and berries. It’s big enough to share — if you want to! ;-)

Looking for a more savory waffle experience? My second favorite is the Spicy Chicken Waffle, an sweet-and-spicy Asian riff on fried chicken and waffles that is nothing short of incredible. (We’ll have a full review of this one coming up soon on DFB!)

Disney Recipe: Rice Cream with Strawberry Sauce from Epcot’s Norway

Today, we are happy to share with you the recipe for a fan favorite — Rice Cream with Strawberry Sauce from Epcot’s Norway Pavilion!

This classic Norwegian dessert can be found on the Akershus Royal Banquet Hall menu in the dessert section. But fans who aren’t interested in booking a table for the princess character encounter can also find this sweet treat at Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe.

Because Rice Cream is a chilly, rich dessert, it makes a fun alternative to ice cream. And it’s also a good choice if you aren’t in the mood for sugar shock; the sweetness here comes from the beautiful, bright red strawberry sauce, which complements the creamy rice pudding perfectly.

You can find my review of Epcot’s Rice Cream here!

Norway's Rice Cream in Epcot

This adapted recipe does not require fresh strawberries, making it a perfect option for an autumn dessert when the summer berries aren’t in season. :-)

I’m thinking this would make a lovely addition to a holiday dinner, no?

Rice Cream with Strawberry

Serves 4-6
Ingredients for Rice Cream:
1 1/2 cups water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup short-grain white rice
2 cups milk
1 cup heavy cream

Review: Lefse and Waffles at Epcot’s Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe

Time to stop by one of everyone’s (well, mine at least ;-D) favorite places to grab a snack while at Epcot — Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe in the Norway Pavilion!

This place has some pretty amazing cult favorites for being so small (which it is…very, very small).

The custardy Schoolbread and the Rice Cream Pudding are some pretty incredible snacks in and of themselves, but I couldn’t wait to branch out on a recent visit. (Nope…no Aquavit this time, kids. ;-D But maybe something even better??)

Better than School Bread?!?

Atmosphere

Located just beyond the Stave church in Norway, you’ll smell the wonderful pastries of Kringla before you open its door.

Outside View

Once you’re in, you are greeted by a host of cases that hold everything from sandwiches to pastries. (Note: Don’t try to lift the glass panels to get better pictures — you’ll get yelled at. Trust me.) This is also a terrific spot to get coffee, or even that shot of Aquavit if you’re looking to [Read more…]
