Review: Breakfast at Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory, Port Orleans French Quarter

Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory — it’s a long name for dining spot, and kind of a tongue twister — but it has some unique menu items and is definitely worth a visit if you’re a beignet fan!

Or a New Orleans fan.

Or a Mardi Gras fan.

Or just like big, giant parade float heads hanging from ceilings.

Not sure what I’m talking about? Let’s take a look inside… .

Atmosphere

Sassagoula is, of course, the river running through the resorts around Downtown Disney, including the sister Port Orleans resorts — Riverside, and French Quarter. Upon arrival at the Port Orleans French Quarter resort, a welcoming indoor courtyard complete with an ornate fountain creates a relaxing atmosphere.

If you’re hungry, you’ll find Floatworks — named as such because it’s themed after a warehouse storing Mardi Gras parade props —  opposite the Registration area. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks are offered throughout the day.

Look closely and you’ll see some hidden dining references in the Sassagoula sign. Utensils, seafood, lemon, asparagus… what else?

Here’s your first glimpse of the “floatworks.” Crazy, eh?

It's Mardi Gras time!

It’s Mardi Gras time!

While the weird parade props have always disturbed me, some guests enjoy the whimsical decor. I understand the theme but find the decor outdated. (I’d love to see a refresh here). Of course, you’ll find whimsy around the resort — from Scales (the serpent pool slide) to jazzy tunes, the vibe is casual and relaxing. Just as it should be on vacation!

I do like the dining room’s dark wooden tables and mismatched chairs; it just feels cozy. Brick accents and lantern lighting adds to the quaint ambiance. In fact, the whole resort is a mixture of playfulness and charm.

Most importantly, the dining area and serving stations are kept very tidy. (During our stay, we did not find this to be the case over at the Riverside Mill.)

Artwork reflects the Cajun and Creole flavors on the menu such as the Gumbo and Jambalaya dishes served later in the day.

Breakfast here at Sassagoula often includes their “you-can-only-get-‘em-here” made-to-order beignets. Many Disney guests visit this spot solely for these doughy treats.

“The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Disney!” Breakfast!

We’re back for more fun with a brand new version of our hit series, “The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Disney”!

Best Thing I Ever Ate in Disney -- Breakfast

With your awesome input, we had tons of fun exploring our favorite Disney food categories a looong time ago. But Disney keeps adding amazing new dishes, treats, and foods! And so, it’s time to revisit these questions and add some of our new, and enduring, favorites to the mix!

Today, we’ll get the day started off right just like we should — with some delicious Breakfast! I’ll let you know a few of my favorites…and then it’s your turn to chime with in YOUR votes for “The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Disney — Breakfast”!

Let’s get to crackin’! (Like…eggs. Crackin’ eggs. Get it? :-) )

Warm Honey Pecan Cinnamon Roll at Kouzzina

In no time flat, Kouzzina by Cat Cora has become one of my favorite places to dine at Walt Disney World for breakfast. It’s quiet, relaxed, and offers some truly delicious eats.

If we’re going to talk about killer ways to start your day, first up has to be one of my favorite breakfast finds of recent Disney visits: the Warm Honey Pecan Cinnamon Roll at Kouzzina.

Warm Honey Pecan Cinnamon Roll

Wouldn’t you just love to dig into one of these babies right. this. minute?? Me tooooo! Warm, butter-rich dough envelops a beautiful center filled to overflowing with that yummy, buttery, cinnamon-y goodness that just makes your heart SING!

This. This is what a cinnamon roll should look like — so gooey that you need a fork to eat it! Believe me when I say that the Warm Honey Pecan Cinnamon Roll is plenty reason enough to make Kouzzina your very next advance dining reservation.

Classics become so for a reason. In Disney food circles, classics = awesomeness (and often over-the-topness) that just about everyone loves.

Case in point: Tonga Toast at Kona Cafe.

Review: Disney Food Air Fresheners (Yep! We Smelled ‘Em)

How do you capture that Disney vibe long after you’ve eaten your last Mickey Bar? The nose knows, as they say!

We first showed you these quirky-yet-kind-of-awsesome Disney Food-Inspired Air Fresheners a while back, but on a recent trip to Disney World, I got to check them out firsthand!

Do they really send you right back to that last vacation with Disney-scented memories? I’ll let you know what I think!

Air Fresheners

Oh, and by the way? Are you thinking stocking stuffers like I am? Great timing. The Disney Store is having a great online sale now through Thursday, which means you can get 25% off of these or any other Disney Parks merchandise you pick up! Just click this link or any of the links below and use PARK25 at check-out for the discount!

Disney Food-Inspired Air Fresheners

When I first heard about these Disney food air fresheners, I was a skeptic. Seriously? How do you “bottle” Mickey Waffle smell?? So I was pretty intrigued to give these a sniff myself.

Turkey Leg Air Freshener

Which one did I start with? The Turkey Leg Air Freshener, of course. I just couldn’t believe that this could be for real!

Guest Review: Specialty Mickey Waffles at Roaring Fork in Disney’s Wilderness Lodge

Update: Wilderness Waffles are no longer being served at Roaring Fork. They are now on the menu at Whispering Canyon Cafe.

Join me in welcoming back Marc Stumbo with a review of the sweet breakfast waffle dishes at Roaring Fork at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. I’ve been wanting to share these for a long time!

“Roaring Fork,” which I believe translates roughly to “Fishy sign, hidden Mickey Waffles” is located deep inside the majestic Wilderness Lodge on Bay Lake.

My Google translate window might be a bit off, but the point remains that Roaring Fork is a hidden gem in an amazing resort that doesn’t force you to pay for a buffet to get at those tasty, tasty Mickey Waffles.

Does the eatery live up to its potential? Find out LIVE in two nights on NBC prime time.

Wilderness Lodge Lobby

Atmosphere

Above you can see the stunning lobby of the Wilderness Lodge, home of the Whispering Canyon Café serving all-you-can-eat Mickey Waffles for breakfast. One day, you’ll graduate to that level of waffle consuming prowess, but today is a training run at an eatery around the corner.

Resist the temptation that is the Whispering Canyon Café and look for this long hallway to Roaring Fork. It will serve as today’s gateway to flavor country.

Wilderness Lodge Hallway

I know what you’re thinking when looking at that photo…how did he get a shot with nobody in it? Disney Magic, my friends. At the end of this long hallway is our prize: the Roaring Fork quick service dining location where we’ll be eating breakfast.

Roaring Fork Sign

One of the nicest entrances to a quick service dining location you’ll see at Walt Disney World awaits you as you speed past, shoving your way to the front of the waffle queue [Read more…]

New! Disney Food-Inspired Air Fresheners

According to one of my favorite people at the DisneyParks Blog, merch specialist Steven Miller, there are some awesome new Disney food merch items about to debut!

Turkey Leg and Mickey Ice Cream Bar Air Fresheners

Taking the powerful sense of smell and combining it with the Disney food world, the Parks will release Disney Food-inspired Air Fresheners in August!

And while I’m not 100% sure (not even 25% sure) I’d want a Turkey Leg scent emanating from my car on these hot summer days, I sure could get on board with a yummy Mickey Waffle smell or that spicy candy apple!
