Review: Pomegranate Lime Frozen Mojito and Empanadas at La Cantina in Epcot’s Mexico Pavilion

Happy NATIONAL MOJITO DAY, EVERYONE!! OK, I’ll be honest. We’d PLANNED to share this post with you on the ACTUAL National Mojito Day, but a big news item came up and we had to bump it. So this is our STAND-IN National Mojito Day. I hope that works for you. :-D

Still, crazy how time flies, isn’t it? I remember last Mojito Day like it was yesterday! It feels like I was just putting up my Mojito Tree, baking mojito cookies and singing all my favorite mojito carols…

Oh, wait, was that just me?

Anyway, on this day as we gather with family and friends to celebrate Mojitos all around the world ;), we thought we’d show you a mojito in Epcot’s Mexico Pavilion that has more than a bit of a twist… the Pomegranate Lime Frozen Mojito found at La Cantina de San Angel.

The drink serving is huge – it fills every inch of the glass and beyond, as you can see. (At $11.50, I should hope so.)  As a bonus, it’s also looks terrific!

A traditional Mojito is a mix of fresh mint, lime, club soda, sugar, and white rum on the rocks. The Pomegranate Lime Frozen Mojito has… well, it’s got lime :) . And pomegranate!

Tequila – as opposed to rum – is the featured liquor here, and I can’t say I picked up one hint of mint. What I did pick up on was a refreshing blast of cold, fruity sweetness nicely balanced by the tart lime.

For all my joking about Mojito Day traditions, I’m actually not a huge mojito fan myself, so this version is far more up my alley.

You know what goes well with a tart-and-sweet beverage like this? Something

Review: Lunch at Bongos Cuban Cafe in Disney World’s Downtown Disney

Sometimes I need a little Gloria Estefan in my life, so I high tail it over to Bongos Cuban Cafe!

I’m just kidding. I rarely need any Gloria Estefan in my life, but I DO need the deliciousness that is Bongos. Seriously, you guys, I haven’t had a bad meal here…ever. It’s a hidden gem, and if you haven’t been there, start your planning engines for your next trip!

It’s Cuban food of awesomeness — tons of flavor, not-always-efficient-but-at-least-friendly service, and drinks that are BIGGER THAN YOUR HEAD. Plus souvenir glasses. And POPSYCAKES!

Atmosphere

Located in Downtown Disney West Side, most Disney guests know this eatery as “the place with the big pineapple out front.” During the evening, Bongos looks and feels like a nightclub that you’d find in Old Havana or South Beach. It’s like a party waiting to happen, this place.

Open and airy, you can imagine the celebration spilling out onto the “street” during especially festive times.

And a festive good time is what you’d expect here, as is evident from the two bars that dominate the inside.

Sit yourself down on actual bongos at the bar up front! Fun (and REALLY uncomfortable!).

So if you’re tired of sitting on the Bongos, no worries; this place offers a wide array of seating areas. The upstairs seating area — both inside and outside on the balcony — offer good views of the surrounding Downtown Disney area.

It may be a teensy bit quieter upstairs at night, but during the day (for lunch) the whole place is nice and relaxed.

News! Rix Lounge Announces Tequila Tasting at Coronado Springs Resort

Now and then we like to explore the lesser-known hang-outs at Walt Disney World. Tucked into the main building at Coronado Springs Resort and specializing in awesome tequilas (they’re run by the same folks who run Cava del Tequila!) Rix Lounge is a unique place to unwind!

Rix Lounge Entrance

We’ve got a photo tour of this fun nightspot for you below, but first I have some super fun news to share for those of us who love tequila and beverage tastings!

Rix Lounge’s FIRST EVER Tequila Tasting

Rix Lounge will host their first ever Tequila Tasting on Saturday, March 30th, at 8pm! A tequila ambassador (Hilda, maybe?) will guide guests through the history and production process of tequila, the different types and categories of tequila, and of course a tasting.

Rix Tequila Tasting

I’m guessing this will be a LOT like the tequila tastings from the Epcot Food and Wine Festival, which have now been turned into full blown tequila lunches! The tasting will include Milagro Select Barrel Silver, Partida Reposado, and Gran Centenario Añejo. A delicious Sangrita will be the finishing touch.

Tickets are available to the general public (ages 21 and up) at $30 per person in advance, or $35 per person at the door. A table reservation is required.

Rix Lounge Photo Tour

Now, for those of you who haven’t ever been to this little-known Disney hot spot, let’s take a gander around! Here’s a photo tour for ya!!

Many special events are held at Rix Lounge, including kid birthday parties and romantic weddings! So, check the schedule before planning your evening. There is [Read more…]

Review: Crispy Fried Shrimp and Bacardi Frozen Mojito at Epcot’s Refreshment Port

Note: As of 7.22.2012, the Crispy Fried Shrimp Basket is once again being served with french fries instead of tostones. Thanks to reader Billie Jean for the heads up!

Today, it’s time to talk about another delicious snack available at that culinary gateway to World Showcase — Epcot’s Refreshment Port!

I told you in the not-so-distant past about my favorite new treat there that’s worthy of the calories, the Spicy Chicken and Cheddar Poppers. (I know, they’re frozen, probably bought in bulk from Sysco or something, but they’re wonderful!)

Well, in the name of research (and with a new, shrimp-loving friend to join me), I decided once more to forego a sit-down meal during a recent visit to Epcot in order to sample a few more items on the Refreshment Port Menu (hidden gem of fried-ness that it is).

Menu - click image for larger version. See overall section for info on menu changes.

After looking over the menu (and NOT succumbing to the temptation of more spicy chicken cheddar poppers…because I’m strong like that), we decided to try the Crispy Fried Shrimp with French Fries and Cajun Tartar Sauce.

Just as before at this location, we had to wait for a bit to get our food. But since we were surrounded by British teens having the time of their lives (cheerleading competition, maybe?), at least we made some new friends while we waited.

While I didn’t eat too much of this, I did have a taste. The shrimp were piping hot when they emerged, fried perfectly with a good, crunchy breading. The dip reminded me of a tangy remoulade (but I’m not a connoisseur).

First Look: Mad T Party Drinks and Eats at Disney California Adventure

This past Friday, Disney California Adventure surprised visitors with a soft opening of their new nighttime dance party, the Alice-in-Wonderland-themed Mad T Party

Atmosphere

Knowing that the “Rabbit Hole” was opening at 7:00, we got there just before so we could see the whole grand opening first night extravaganza. You can see by the photo below, that the soft opening wasn’t too big of a secret; lots of people!

Mad T Party Rabbit Hole (aka Entrance)

As far as seating goes, Disney really did it right. I am totally in love with the Linvin plastic furniture that they purchased to fill the area. If you want one of these in your home, though, it’s going to set you back about $895 (I did the research, I hope Disney got a bulk discount!). There are plenty of chairs, but you might have to fight me for a purple one….

And as the night wore on, the atmosphere got even more colorful…

Mad T Party After Dark

While waiting for the Rabbit Hole to open, which basically meant walking though a long tunnel of mist, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum greeted guests and put on a little banter to entertain us while we waited. I wonder if these guys shaved their heads for the part?

Also, check the tough guy neck tats on the backs of their heads. Pretty [Read more…]

Disney Cruise Review: Mojito Seminar Aboard the Disney Magic

Our Dining in Disneyland columnist, Heather Sievers, is morphing into a Cruise columnist today! Check out this awesome Mojito Seminar!!

Looking for a fun and inexpensive way to get in some adult beverage time on your Disney Cruise? Go to a drink seminar! On our recent 11-day Mediterranean cruise we learned that there is no need to pay $10 for 1 mojito when you can pay $15 for four or more!

Being our third Disney Cruise, you’d think we would have heard about these special seminars, but, alas we had not…until our lovely concierge, Lynda, asked us if we liked mojitos.  Sure, we’ll check that out! Here’s how it works: Sign up, show up, drink up.

Specs

The seminars take place during the day in one of the ship’s restaurants. Ours was in Animator’s Palate.

Animator's Palate

There were probably about 30-40 people in the seminar. The event was set up with about 4 tables with 8-10 chairs each, which all faced our “instructor.”

This is how you do it!

When we sat at our spots, we saw that everything was right and ready for our lesson!

Mojito Supplies!

The seminar included learning how to make four different types of mojitos. Each glass was [Read more…]
