Disney Food Crawl: Pimento Cheese Edition

Cheese, glorious PIMENTO Cheese! It’s time for the ultimate Disney food trend crawl: the Pimento Cheese Crawl! We’ve been seeing this creamy cheese pop up in about two zillion places as of late, and with good reason.

Pimento Cheese BLT

Pimento Cheese BLT

In case you’re not familiar with the “caviar of the South”, it’s basically creamy cheddar cheese mixed with mayo (or sour cream) and pimento pieces. There are some spices in there as well, and those can vary from chef to chef (or from grandma to grandma!).

So if you’re like me, and you love all things Pimento Cheesy, THIS is the crawl for you! So, let’s begin.

Pimento Cheese BLT

First up, you’ll need to start your day at Animal Kingdom. Lucky for you, there’s a lot going on over there with the opening of Pandora — World of Avatar. So it’s the perfect time to hit that rope drop, work up an appetite on Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey, then make your way over to the Smiling Crocodile in Discovery Island. (Should there be Rocky music playing here or something? I feel like there should be.)

Who’s coming with? Let’s go!

Our first stop: Walt Disney World!

Pimento Grilled Cheese, Planet Hollywood Observatory

If you were there with us when Planet Hollywood Observatory opened (or actually, reopened) its doors earlier this year, then you know that we weren’t all that impressed with most of what we tried. But there was one standout: the Pimento Grilled Cheese.

Pimento Grilled Cheese -- Up Close

Pimento Grilled Cheese — Up Close

The triple decker sandwich is two meals in one. First, you have a fairly traditional Grilled Cheese, spiced up with the addition of Pimento Cheese. But then, the second story involved super cheesy Mac and Cheese layered between crunchy Grilled Bread. Yep, that’s A Layer of Carbs on Top of More Carbs. And we are completely fine with that. First Look and Review: Planet Hollywood Observatory at Disney Springs

It’s official! We have visited the newly-opened Planet Hollywood Observatory!

We came. We saw. We conquered…And We Were Thoroughly Underwhelmed. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

A major overhaul to the inside, outside, and menu seemed like the perfect excuse to head on back to Planet Hollywood. So armed with a hearty appetite and a couple of friends, I set out for what was a big, faded blue orb, and is now Disney Springs’ newest “old, repurposed” building (Disney Springs is said to be based on a town in the 1920s that grew up around a natural spring — and many of the buildings have been repurposed into shopping and dining venues…so they all look vaguely industrial).

We don’t want give away the last line in this saga, so let’s start from the beginning. (Hint. It wasn’t all bad.) By the way, this is going to be a LONG review, so settle in, my friends!

Atmosphere

Have you been to Disney Springs, formerly known as Downtown Disney? Then you know exactly where to find Planet Hollywood Observatory. It hasn’t moved. (Oh, and we’re calling it PHO from here on out, K?)

Outside View

Outside View

We walked around the building while the light was still good, just so you could get a sense of how much things have — and haven’t — changed. As you can see, most of the neon, and all of the blue, are gone. Also gone is the sign at the top of the sign. Unfortunately, nothing has replaced it, so the whole thing looks a bit — okay, a LOT — unfinished. [Read more…]

Happy 2017!

As has been the case for the last few years, Disney has promised some big doin’s coming our way during the calendar year.

And oh, well, sure. The entire universe is poised on the edge of its collective seat, awaiting some indication of when Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land will spring to life. BUT — even though we really don’t expect to hear of openings on those fronts in 2017, there’s still PLENTY to look forward to!
