Spotted: Pokemon, Mario, and Thomas & Friends Treats in Epcot’s Japan Pavilion

Today, we are back with another fun and wacky trip through Mitsukoshi Department Store in the Japan Pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase.

Mitsukoshi Department Store

Seriously, I haven’t been to the actual country of Japan. (Yet.) But if the department stores there are half as awesome as Mitsukoshi is, then I’m booking the next flight.

I mean, where else can you go to buy all things Hello Kitty; the coolest kimonos, chopsticks, and tea sets imaginable; plus monorail plates (I know. They’re bullet trains. Whatever.) — AND pearls?!?

And don’t even get me started on the Pocky and Sake! (See what I just did there?) Plus a myriad of other fun eats.

Well, we’re staying with the theme of animation on this trip, as we take another fun look at cool candy you can score in the Japan Pavilion.

Pokémon, Mario, and Thomas & Friends Food Finds

Let’s get the party started with everyone’s favorite little anime…dude — Pikachu from the world of Pokémon. Well, I mean, he’s in the front. But he has his buddies with him on this “Drink for Entertainment”.

If you’d like to get some insight into what you’ll be ingesting, have a peek at the nutritional information and contents on the back. Although I don’t promise that either will be very illuminating.

New! Star Wars Light Saber Pocky

While Pocky isn’t exclusive to Walt Disney World, many guests first sample these delicious, chocolate-dipped cookie snack sticks during a tour of Epcot’s World Showcase. A stop by Mitsukoshi, the department store in Japan, is a fun diversion!

And we’ve got news! Pocky has finally joined forces with the Dark Side…and the light side. ;-) Yep – light saber Pocky is now available for those of us who need all of our food Star-Wars-ified!

Disney World Food…for MEN?

Erin Foster is the Disney Food for Families columnist and a behind-the-scenes guru here at Disney Food Blog! Check out more of her posts here.

Not long ago, AJ wrote a post about the classic Japanese snack, Pocky, found in the Japan pavilion at Epcot.

The one tidbit of information in this post that got the most comments was the mention that among the multitude of Pocky flavors is Men’s Pocky. That’s right — Pocky, FOR MEN.

While Men’s Pocky is a product of Japanese culture primarily, this discussion got me wondering if there were any other “male-specific” foods sold at Walt Disney World.

The only other official “men’s” food I could come up with were menu items at the Garden View Lounge at the Grand Floridian:

  • The Gentleman’s Tea Platter: duck & cherry terrine, chicken & pork roulade, and country pate with a side of English Blue Stilton cheese), and
  • The Prince Edward’s Tea: the same as the Gentleman’s tea, but with the addition of scones, Devonshire cream, and a glass of port.

I’m guessing that there are special offerings for men so that the gents who get dragged to tea by their lady friends can still have their man cards intact. :-)

Real men need special food to save them from the terror of the crustless sandwich at the Garden View Tea Room.

For those masculine types that want their foods to proclaim their Royal man status, there is no shortage of [Read more…]

Snack Series: Pocky in Epcot’s Japan Pavilion

OK, so while this isn’t technically a “Disney-made” snack (I’ve even found it in my local grocery store recently), many of us have our first experience with Pocky in Mitsukoshi Department Store in Epcot’s Japan pavilion. I know I did! Just in case you haven’t experienced Pocky yet, let me introduce you!

These slender, crisp cookies coated in chocolate (and occasionally other flavors) are one of my favorite snacks available in Epcot’s World Showcase. You’ll find the tasty sweets way in the back of the fabled department store — near the indoor sake bar.

There Are Many Flavors of Pocky Available

There’s a Pocky for every flavor preference, from the purist approach of milk chocolate to fruit-flavored options. You can also find chocolate and nut combinations.

And, of course, there’s “Men’s Pocky.” No, I’m not kidding. Men’s Pocky is a dark chocolate version of the snack. :-)

The cookies come in a range of quantities as well, from little pocky boxes to GIANT POCKY BOXES. Just in case you need to share (yeah, right).

On this visit, I went for the classic: “chocolate cream covered biscuit sticks.”

My Disney Easter Basket

Easter in my house growing up always meant colored eggs and baskets full of plastic grass topped with candy and sweets. And, as we know, Disney’s big on the whole candy and sweets thing, so I wanted to share with you some of my favorite Disney sweets. These would definitely be in my personal Easter basket:

So, why these particular goodies? Let’s take a look at my Easter basket contents — and a few items that just didn’t fit! — and hopefully you’ll find a few new treats to try!

Rowntree’s Fruit Pastilles
Easily my all-time favorite candy, Rowntree’s Fruit Pastilles can be found in Epcot’s UK pavilion. For those of you who haven’t tried them, think: fruity jujubes coated with sugar. Then make them about 100 times better than fruity jujubes coated with sugar, and you have Rowntree’s Fruit Pastilles.

When these come in rolls, the candy is circular, but [Read more…]
