Review: San Angel Inn in Epcot’s Mexico Pavilion

Today, we are heading into the pyramid once again for dinner at one of Epcot’s most atmospheric restaurants — San Angel Inn Restaurante.

We have had a myriad of experiences here, ranging from very, very bad to excellent. In the past, San Angel Inn has suffered from a Disney restaurant’s biggest drawback — inconsistency.

We haven’t visited the original Mexico table service restaurant since the pavilion’s latest spot, La Hacienda de San Angel, opened on the waterfront. But we continue to love to drop by La Cava del Tequila and Cantina de San Angel, Mexico’s counter service option, so we thought it was time to give San Angel Inn a try once more.

Besides, they had undergone some changes since our last meal, and we wanted to see them for ourselves.


Walking through Epcot anytime of the day is a treat, but it’s especially beautiful at night. And that’s when we decided to visit Mexico for dinner one evening on a recent trip.

You’ll find San Angel Inn by heading into the Aztec Temple, which serves as the centerpiece for Mexico.

And inside the pyramid, it’s always nighttime. As you make your way toward the back of the building, you come into an open courtyard setting, which feels like the town square of a quaint Mexican Village. In the distance, you’ll spot another Aztec Temple that looks very like the one you just entered. Beyond that, there’s also an active volcano. It’s really quite pretty, and sets the mood for the entire area, which also houses shopping, as well as La Cava del Tequila and the Three Caballeros Attraction.

In fact, boats of riders make their way along the quiet river below the restaurant — very similar to Blue Bayou in Disneyland.

Among the other village building facades that border the square is the entrance to San Angel Inn, through this archway.

Step through the archway, and the floorplan for the restaurant opens up before you. It’s actually a fairly small space. But tables are placed very close together. This was a new detail of the recent renovation and restaurant updates, and I’ve gotta say — it’s not my favorite aspect of dining here. I’m uncomfortable in a restaurant whenever I feel like I can reach out and touch the person at the table next to me.

This table for two, near the rail that overlooks the Three Caballeros attraction, does offer a bit more intimacy. We always recommend requesting a waterside table here!

The layout of the restaurant is quite nice. The floor is actually comprised of varying levels, which lend some interest to the space. I took this photo near the railing, looking back up into the courtyard.

DIY Disney Recipe: Pollo A Las Rajas from Epcot’s San Angel Inn Restaurante

Guest chef Carol E. takes us to Epcot’s San Angel Inn Restaurante this week. And she’s sharing two different ways to make the guest favorite Pollo A Las Rajas!

My husband and I absolutely love Mexican food, so one of our favorite restaurants to visit in Epcot’s World Showcase is the San Angel Inn inside Mexico’s Mayan pyramid. If you find yourself lucky enough to visit this restaurant, ask for a table close to the river which runs through the back of the restaurant.

We’ve visited San Angel Inn several times, but I was recently introduced to what has quickly become one of my favorite dishes in all of Epcot! It’s called Pollo A Las Rajas!

As soon as I got home, I started flipping through all my Disney cookbooks to find this recipe. I was told it has been a staple on their menu since the beginning, so I was excited to learn that the recipe was printed in the Cooking with Mickey and the Disney Chefs cookbook!

You might be thinking, I can’t even pronounce this, how am I supposed to make this dish?! Don’t be intimidated…we’ll cover what it all means before we get started making it!

Pollo is the Spanish word for chicken (pronounced Po-yo). A Las Rajas, pronounced awe las (like Las Vegas) raw-hoss (like boss with an h instead of a b), means cracks or splits in Spanish, and refers to the skin of the roasted poblano pepper that we will be “cracking” the skin off of as we roast it in hot oil. So there you go, Pollo A Las Rajas is a super easy dish to make for dinner and is a fancy Spanish phrase for cracked pepper chicken!

I do have to say after looking over the recipe, I was a little disappointed. It seems they have changed the recipe that they actually serve now in the restaurant. I wanted to try the original recipe that was listed in the cookbook, but I was already in love with the dish they served me a few weeks ago in the restaurant. What a dilemma!

The only way to solve this problem is to make both dishes, so that’s what we’ll do! Below you’ll find the original recipe first and then the changes that the restaurant has made to make this dish now. We’ll meet up at the end to discuss! :-) Let’s get started!

Review: San Angel Inn Restaurante

Well, we finally did it. After dreading a trip back to Epcot’s San Angel Inn in the Mexico pavilion due to a couple of bad meals there, we booked an ADR. It was more a “we have to go because I write a food blog” thing than an avid desire to give the restaurant another chance, but…as it turns out…we’d been missing out for far too long.

Atmosphere has always been the main selling feature of San Angel Inn. Located inside the Epcot Mexico pyramid with seating along the Gran Fiesta Tour river, this restaurant offers a fun ambiance that you just won’t get anywhere else (besides Blue Bayou in Disneyland, maybe!).
