Guest Review: Florida Orange Groves Winery Seminar at the Epcot Food & Wine Festival

It’s time to start gearing up for the 2012 Epcot Food and Wine Festival! So please join me in welcoming Vikki Hurley-Schubert & Michelle Maskaly with a review of a past Epcot Food and Wine Festival event.

Beverage seminars were offered during the 2011 Festival, including the Florida Orange Groves activity priced at $10 per person. Now, on to the review!

I’m not a fan of wine, so when my foodie buddy, Michelle, better known as The Adirondack Chick, suggested one of the seminars at Epcot’s Food and Wine Festival, I wrinkled my nose, sort of whined and said “OK, you’re the guest, let’s go”.

To say we enjoyed the Florida Orange Groves Winery session would be an understatement. So would calling it a typical festival wine tasting. When we sat down, the wines were already poured to tempt and tease us with their bright and fruity aromas.

Atmosphere and Info

From the start, the winery’s owner, Vincent Shook was engaging and fun. He incorporated stories about how they got started in the business, debunked several myths about fruit wines, and incorporated practical ways to use the beverage, even telling us what dishes he and his wife like to pair their favorites with.

We were surprised to learn that Florida has more than a [Read more…]

Friday Happy Hour: Downtown Disney Margarita Bar

Situated on the boardwalk of Downtown Disney’s Marketplace in Orlando, the Margarita Bar serves up margaritas, bottled beverages, a Rum Runner, draft beer, frozen drinks, and yes, even cigars! It’s a handy little escape prior to a dinner reservation, or to relax on a sunny Orlando afternoon.

This week (and for several weeks previous, according to the bartender), the drink special was a Grapefruit Margarita.

Atmosphere

The Margarita Bar is tucked a bit out of the way of the main Downtown Disney thoroughfare — in fact, it’s a few steps down and situated right on the dock next to the Downtown Disney Marina!

The Bar itself is more of a kiosk — a small island-esque shack on the dock with several umbrella-clad tables close by.

Thankfully after strolling around in the hot Florida sun, those tables alongside the marina provide some shade! And the live music on the waterfront invites guests to unwind. Frequently, [Read more…]

First Look! Disney Fantasy Cruise Ship Specialty Cocktails

The Disney Fantasy was christened in New York City this week, and eager passengers await their first voyage on the newest Disney Cruise Line ship!

We wanted to share a few of the specialty cocktails you’ll find on board — you know we’re all about prioritizing any on board credit you may have received! ;-)

Adults-Only Restaurants

The Fantasy’s adults-only restaurants, Palo and Remy, will offer some delicious ways to complement your meal!

Remy

The uber-posh French restaurant, Remy, features a cocktail that is expertly handcrafted at your table. The signature cocktail “Collette” combines Taittinger Champagne and pear vodka, then is garnished with fresh blueberry, dried apricot, and mint leaf.

We loved this one! :-) The cool science-y part? When vodka is mixed with champagne, the champagne loses its bubbles! The sugar being released from the piece of candied apricot re-creates the effervescence! Taste? Incredible.

Collette Champagne Cocktail

Remy also boasts two wine lists! A special list of nearly 200 wines features vintage French wines, and Remy’s Vault holds the exclusive list with rare wines from around the globe. The latter lists includes a 1947 Château Cheval Blanc, which was the wine requested by the food critic from “Ratatouille” and retails at $25,000 per bottle. You’ll also find a 1961 Château Latour, which was also featured in the film.

Bottles from the Vault are presented by a white-gloved sommelier in an elegant velvet box with the wine on a silver-plated plaque.

News! Jiko Wine Dinner Announced for April 5th, 2012

The Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Jiko has announced their first Wine Dinner of 2012!

Jiko kicks off this year’s Wine Dinner series highlighting the wines of Paul Cluver on Thursday April 5, 2012, at 6:00 PM.

The Cluver Family has owned property in the Elgin Valley near Cape Town since 1896 and are known as pioneers of wine in the area. The chefs at Jiko will create a masterful menu including some great wine pairings.

Jiko’s wine dinners are particularly recommended not only for the outstanding food and wine, but also for the chance to speak with a winemaker who has come all the way from South Africa. This is something we don’t get to do everyday, and I give props to Jiko for going to distance to make sure these events are high-quality and out of the ordinary.

Guest Review: The Mara

I’m happy to welcome back Bill Iadonisi with another enlightening review. This time he explores the counter-service eatery, The Mara, at the Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Jambo House. Take it away, Bill!

Hello Disney Food Blog fans! I know it’s been long between reviews, so let’s get started on this month’s eatery! I have always said that Disney’s resorts hold some of the best places to eat on property. Usually much quieter and less hectic then the restaurants in the parks, and many times you can just walk in and sit down.

Today we are going to the dark continent of Africa for this review. Well, maybe a quick safari trip to Disney’s Jambo house is what we’ll do. The main attractions at this beautiful resort are the breathtaking views of the African Savanna from select rooms. But it’s also home to some of Disney’s finest restaurants.

Although not a five-star eatery, Jambo House’s counter-service establishment, The Mara (named after the Mara River in Africa) is a wonderful place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and it does all three equally well.

The Mara Story - click image for larger version

Atmosphere

So before we explore the eats, let’s take a look at the décor.

Themeing and Decor
Located very close to the Jambo House pool, the Mara is themed (like all Disney eateries), but not as strongly as, say, Pizzafari or even the Flame Tree Barbeque.

Entrance

Inside is a spacious dining area with a colorful mural of African flora and fauna on the two back walls.

Spacious Dining Area

The tables and chairs are plain and Spartan, but overhead are metallic cut-outs that resemble tree leaves, and several support posts that have large wooden beams resembling tree limbs make it appear as though you are [Read more…]
