Because I like to annoy my daughters as much possible, I often sing in the car while chauffeuring them to their many activities. (Hey, when they’re driving me, then they can choose the entertainment.) On one recent trip, I belted out “Be Our Guest” from Beauty and the Beast, then segued into “Les Poissons” from The Little Mermaid, and finished with “Rumbly In My Tumbly” from The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Can you tell I was hungry?

Classic lyrics: Les Poissons: Here's something for tempting the palate, prepared in the classic technique. First you pound the skin flat with a mallet. Then you slash through the skin, give the belly a slice. Then you rub some salt in, 'cause that makes it taste nice.
My impromptu medley of food-focused songs from Disney films got us wondering if there were other eating-related Disney songs we should add to the repertoire. The girls and I did some brainstorming and a bit of online research. We came up with the following list of Disney food songs:
Be Our Guest – Beauty and the Beast
Les Poissons – Little Mermaid
Rumbly in my Tumbly – Winne the Pooh
Spoonful of Sugar – Mary Poppins
Feed the Birds – Mary Poppins (birds get hungry)
Chow Down – Lion King on Broadway
Fish are Friends Not Food – Finding Nemo the Musical
Kanine Krunchies – 101 Dalmatians (dogs get hungry too)
Mad Tea Party Medley – Alice in Wonderland (the animated version)
Ice Cream Freeze – Hannah Montana
Hot Dog! – Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
Soup or Salad, Biscuits or Fries – House of Mouse (sung to the tune of Supercalifragalisticexpialidocious)
Of course there are some excellent snippets of food lyrics in non-food-centric songs. Among my favorites is this line from Beauty and the Beast’s “Gaston”:
When I was a lad I ate four dozen eggs
Ev’ry morning to help me get large
And now that I’m grown I eat five dozen eggs
So I’m roughly the size of a barge!
My bug-loving daughter Charlie likes this line from the Jungle Book’s “Bare Necessities”:
Wherever I wander, wherever I roam
I couldn’t be fonder of my big home
The bees are buzzin’ in the tree
To make some honey just for me
When you look under the rocks and plants
And take a glance at the fancy ants
Then maybe try a few
And of course the modern classic High School Musical includes “Stick to the Status Quo” with the lyric:
ZEKE (spoken):
I love to bake! Strudels, scones, even apple pandowdy
BASKETBALL PLAYERS:
Not another sound
ZEKE (spoken):
Someday I hope to make the perfect creme brulee
While not workable for sing-alongs, there are also a number of foodie instrumental songs on Disney film soundtracks, most notably those from the score of Ratatouille by the incomparable Michael Giacchino.
Other instrumentals include:
I’m Hungry – 101 Dalmatians
What A Day / Breakfast at Tony’s – Lady and the Tramp
At the Restaurant – Rescuers Down Under
Fortune Cookie – Freaky Friday (2003)
We were surprised not to find any food songs from Princess and the Frog, a film which has many scenes in restaurants. There is an album called “Disney Funny Food Songs.” This is a strange compilation of novelty numbers and classic songs with a Disney twist.
So, Disney food folk, what am I missing? What can I add to my morning carpool set list? How else has Disney memorialized food in song?
