Earlier today, Disney executives spoke out on their financial status amidst the closures and answered questions regarding the future of the company.
CEO Bob Chapek and CFO Christine McCarthy announced Shanghai Disneyland will open later this month, but when asked about when Disney’s other experiences (like cruises) will resume, they were much less certain.
According to Chapek, Disney has “limited visibility into reopening the rest of the parks, cruise ships, and stores.” When asked about how Disney plans to handle orders on upcoming cruise ships, Chapek said cruises will probably be the last of their travel oriented businesses to come back online.
Disney’s parks, experiences, and products sector (which included cruises, was down 10% in the last quarter.CFO Christine McCarthy commented “cruises represent a relatively small percentage of operating income in the parks segment but is highly rated amongst consumers.”
According to McCarthy, Disney depends on repeat customers. And although Chapek noted guests have expressed interest in returning, the cruises likely won’t start sailing for several months.
Disney is confident cruise schedules will eventually return to normal, but as of now, they have cancelled all departures of the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy through June 18th, and cancelled Disney Magic sailings through July 2nd.
