In late April, it was announced that construction for Universal Orlando Resort’s upcoming theme park, Epic Universe, had met with delays in light of the current global situation which has led to the temporary closure of Universal Orlando as well as Walt Disney World Resort and other area destinations.
Epic Universe was originally slated to open in 2023, and even with the announced delay in construction, it had not been revealed how the delay would affect the opening timeline. However, according to an article by the Orlando Sentinel, construction of Epic Universe will not resume immediately upon the Resort’s reopening.
In a virtual interview at the J.P. Morgan Investor Conference while speaking about Epic Universe, Comcast Chief Financial Officer Mike Cavanagh shared that it’s “better to really march forward with that when we have just a bit more visibility on what’s going on with the economy” after the current crisis resolves. (As a reminder, Comcast owns NBCUniversal.)
Cavanaugh also stated that “confidence is high” that Epic Universe will move forward eventually, adding “It’s a great project.”
He also shared that, with regards to the recent reopening of Shanghai Disneyland, “We’re watching Disney and how it’s going for them in Shanghai,” and “It’s obviously very encouraging to see the demand.”
In other Universal Orlando Resort news, Universal CityWalk will begin reopening with limited operations on May 14th. You can read about which venues will be in operation, hours, and safety measures that will be implemented at CityWalk here.

I love Universal and I visit their theme parks as well as Disney’s when in Orlando. I am very excited for Epic Universe but it seems like this too has come to a grinding halt, along with all the new attractions and updates at Disney. We will eventually get to enjoy all the new and great things to come to the Orlando area, but we will just have to wait a lot longer for them. I hope that once construction can resume again safely, that it will be a big boost for the Florida economy as people get back to work.
