Refreshment Outpost might be one of those spots you walk past on a normal EPCOT day, but during the 2024 EPCOT Food & Wine Festival, you might want to take that detour and check out the new eats and drinks on the special festival menu!
This year’s Food & Wine Festival is ON until November 23rd! But with SO many food booths to try how will you know where to begin? Well, we can help. We’re making our way through ALL (yes, ALL) of the booths and will be sharing a full list of our picks for the very best items we’ve had. But for now, we’re focusing on one underrated spot — Refreshment Outpost — which is serving up unique additions for the Festival this year.
Menu
Refreshment Outpost is a snack spot that’s open year-round, but during the Food & Wine Festival, it serves up something special. In years past we’ve enjoyed one or two festival dishes, so this year’s menu got us excited for THREE new dishes (and we have two words for you: ZEBRA DOMES).
Now that we’ve glanced at the menu, let’s dive into the eats and drinks!
Eats
First up is the new IMPOSSIBLE Spicy Sausage with piri piri peppers and onions, and piri piri aïoli for $6.50.
You could have fooled us — this sausage tasted just like chorizo without the kick but all of the flavor. There’s a smokey flavor from the piri piri aioli and is a really nice combination with the peppers. The bun was soft and we felt this was a pretty good portion for the price.
The next new dish for this year is the Curried Chicken and South African Boerewors Sausage Stew with chickpeas and potatoes served in a bread bowl, which you can get for $5.75.
We were surprised by how much we liked this — especially because it certainly does not look very appetizing! It was fantastic, with bits of curried chicken and chickpeas combined together to create a warm, spiced flavor. The sausage itself was good but the flavor was overshadowed by the curry — which we didn’t mind. We loved the addition of the bread bowl to hold everything together and cut through some of the strong flavors.
And finally — the one dish we were really excited about this year…Chocolate Amarula Mousse Dome with white chocolate. That’s right folks, the Zebra Dome has made it to EPCOT! You can get this dessert for $6.25.
WOO BABY! You really can’t go wrong with this. There’s a reason Zebra Domes are so popular and this giant one is no exception. The mousse is fluffy and creamy without being overly sweet. The chocolate on the inside is rich while the cookie on the bottom is buttery and gives a nice crunch to this otherwise soft dessert. We think it could be shareable, but don’t be surprised if you catch us eating the whole thing — and maybe even one more.
This dessert is definitely a contender for our Best of the Fest list! Onto the drinks!
Drinks
You’ll find two new drinks on this year’s menu and a returning lager. The first new drink is the Keel Farms Blackberry Apricot Jam Hard Cider for $12.00. We could definitely taste the blackberry in this — it was fruity and tart without tasting medicinal like some fruit-based ciders can. It did get a bit syrupy the more we drank but it was still refreshing and a light drink to walk around with.
You can also get the new Habesha Cold Gold Pilsner for $12.00. And, returning for 2024 is the Gulf Stream Brewing Co. Cloud 9 Watermelon Hibiscus Lager for $12.00.
This was actually really nice — refreshing and light! There was a bit of a frothy portion on the top after it was poured. Unfortunately, we didn’t taste the watermelon very much, but the hibiscus hit us right away. Our reporter admitted that they’re not really a big beer drinker, but even to them, this drink was good! We’d liken it to something like a strawberry hard cider, just with a hibiscus-tasting beer vibe instead of a cider.
OVERALL
We just have two words: ZEBRA DOMES! To us, this dessert is worth a stop at Refreshment Outpost alone. The IMPOSSIBLE Spicy Sausage would also be a great option for plant-based eaters, and if you like curry flavors we’d definitely recommend the South African Boerewors Sausage Stew as well. Overall, we think the festival offerings at Refreshment Outpost are a hit this year!
