If you’ve traveled through the Orlando International Airport (MCO), you know it can get BUSY.
MCO is often ranked as one of the top 10 busiest airports in the U.S., and we’ve definitely seen that chaos during busy travel seasons like holidays and holiday weekends. During those times, lines for security get incredibly long and the parking garages fill up quickly. But now MCO is doing something to fix one of those problems.
Click Orlando reports that MCO plans to build a single-site Consolidated Rental Car Facility (ConRAC) to house all rental cars. This would free up parking spaces in all three parking garages, which could be useful during busy travel times.
However, this change seems as though it will come at the expense of the rental car customers. The GOAA Board of Directors voted to raise the Customer Facility Charge (CFC) from $6 to $9 daily, starting on November 1st, with a maximum collection period of seven days. This will be the highest CFC in Florida and among the highest in the nation — tied with LAX.
And the CFC is not the only fee you’ll pay when renting a car. Click Orlando notes, “An airport car rental includes several additional fees like a Concession Recovery Fee, Energy Recovery Fee, Florida Surcharge, Vehicle License Fee, and Waste Tire & Battery Fee. Fees alone for a weeklong rental of an SUV from MCO can total more than $150.”
This new rental car facility would open up about 5000 parking spaces throughout the A, B, and C garages. Customers would have to be shuttled to the ConRAC by either bus or train. Depending on funding, the project is expected to be completed by 2032.
In the meantime, the short-term parking solution includes parking lots that opened near the train station in 2023. In addition, Garage C, Level 4 is currently using a new parking reservation system that could possibly be expanded in the future.
We’ll keep an eye on any parking news at MCO and keep you in the loop so you can plan for your travels! Stay tuned to DFB for the latest.
