The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year for airports, including Orlando International Airport, and considering the crowds we’ve seen at Disney World, many guests have flown through there recently.
However large crowds, combined with the continuing concern over the Omicron variant of COVID-19, have created complications for this travel season. Over Christmas Eve, we began to see thousands of flights getting canceled, with more than 700 either arriving into or departing from the U.S.. And even two days after Christmas, thousands more flights were canceled, and it seems that this trend is continuing into the New Year.
According to WESH, JetBlue has now canceled 1,280 flights from today through January 13th due to crew members falling ill from COVID-19.
A JetBlue spokesperson emailed a statement to Reuters that said: “We expect the number of COVID cases in the northeast — where most of our crewmembers are based — to continue to surge for the next week or two. This means there is a high likelihood of additional cancellations until case counts start to come down.”
This is also the time of year when winter weather can affect flights, so these two factors combined could result in more canceled flights. If you are flying to Disney World, we suggest you keep a close eye on your flight status to make sure there haven’t been any cancelations or delays that could affect your trip. We also recommend arriving early at the airport so you have plenty of time to park (if necessary) and get through security during crowded times.
And if for some reason your flight does get canceled, don’t panic. We’ve put together a guide of what you should do in case that happens. And we’ll continue to monitor the situation, so please keep checking back with us.
