Booking flights is one of the most dreaded aspects of traveling — aside from actually flying.
It’s expensive, it’s hard to know whether you booked the right time to fly and got the best possible seats, and that’s before you even have to step foot in the airport. A lot of folks rely on airlines like Spirit for budget-friendly fares and ease with booking. However, for those who rely on Spirit Airlines to get to Disney World, there will now be one less route.
Spirit Airlines has recently been removing domestic routes after a failed merger with JetBlue. Now, a popular route to the Orlando International Airport (MCO) has been removed due to the blocked merger.
According to the Orlando Business Journal, the route from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) to MCO has been suspended, following the removal of several domestic Spirit flights as well as the shrinking of Spirit’s presence at RDU in recent months.
According to RDU, Spirit discontinued the Orlando service this past weekend, after having now flown since November. The route was scheduled to resume in April, likely ahead of the popular vacation season. Last April, the route ran 53 times, but had dwindled to 14 times by November. It’s likely that the airline simply didn’t have enough of a clientele in the area to support business, especially after the failed $3.8 billion merger with JetBlue.
Spirit Airlines CEO Ted Christie said, “We have been making network adjustments and cost decisions to recover our margin production… refocusing our network on areas of obvious strength like Fort Lauderdale and directing more discretionary airplanes to markets with better supply/demand characteristics.”
If you typically fly Spirit Airlines out of RDU to Orlando, you can consider another budget airline like Southwest. There are plenty of other routes still available. We’re always on the lookout for more Disney and travel news, so make sure to follow along so that you’re always in the loop.
