We know we are! Recently, there have been all sorts of updates regarding the attraction. We saw some construction walls come down, learned about the stores coming to the Disneyland attraction, and now, we’ve got an exciting NEW update regarding some characters/animatronics.
When Disney shared details on the Tiana animatronics that would be inside the Disney World attraction, we also learned about the “critter band” that would be there as well. The critter band is a group of bayou animals that we’ll see strummin’ some tunes in the ride. We didn’t have specifics on these little dudes, but now we DO!
We can’t wait!
Disney shared on Instagram a behind-the-scenes look at how the critters were designed to become animatronics. Here, we learned the exact animals that would be included as well as their NAMES! Laura West, Concept Design Lead for Walt Disney Imagineering shared a few details of the animatronic creation process.

There will be Byalia the Beaver, Beau the Opossum, Gritty the Rabbit, Apollo the Raccoon, Rufus the Turtle, and Timoleon the Otter! West said that when choosing the names, she opted for names that were common throughout the New Orleans area in each of the cultures present there. Gritty is my personal favorite! As you can see from the concept art above, these are the same animals we saw in the original concept art.

The process started with sketches, then creating hand-drawn turnarounds, and then it goes to a dimensional artist who makes a 3D rendering. From there, it goes on to mechanical design and fabrication, where it’s transformed into an animatronic.

We can’t WAIT to see these animatronics in person. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is set to open this summer at Disney World, and we’re keeping a sharp eye out for an exact opening date. We’ll be sure to keep you updated with all the news, so make sure to follow along so you don’t miss a thing.

I am curious about the name Beau being chosen for a female character. In the culture I grew up in, Beau is seen as very masculine and is a man’s name. Beau vs belle. Beaupere vs belle mere. Stepfather vs stepmother. So I’m confused by choosing she/her pronouns for someone named Beau.
