According to USA Today, Silver Airways has ceased all operations as of June 11th, 2025. The abrupt canceling of all flights occurred after Silver Airways attempted to restructure in bankruptcy. The carrier operated flights in Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean, but all flights were canceled as of June 11th.
The airline messaged passengers, writing, “Please do not go to the airport. All credit card purchases should be refundable through your credit card company or your travel agency.” The result was 52 canceled flights on Wednesday, and lots of travelers left scrambling to find new flights.
Silver Airways shut down after an attempt to restructure in bankruptcy. According to ABC Action News, Silver Airways entered into a transaction to sell its assets to another airline holding company. That airline holding company decided not to continue Silver Airways’ flight operations in Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Now, passengers booked on Silver Airways’ flights are left searching for other flight options. ABC Action News reported that alternate flight options for this weekend are hundreds of dollars because of the short notice.
According to USA Today, it is rare for airlines in the U.S. to go out of business. Usually, they are “purchased by another airline or folded into another company’s operations.” A few smaller regional airlines went out of business during the pandemic, and Tailwind was the most recent airline to go out of business in 2024. Larger carriers usually reshuffle their service when an airline goes out of business.
While Silver Airways has officially ceased operations, some airlines are also teaming up to provide better experiences for travelers. JetBlue and United Airlines recently announced a collaboration that allows travelers to earn bonus miles and loyalty benefits across both airlines. Plus, travelers can book flights for both airlines on either website. While the collaboration, called Blue Sky, is expected to roll out in the fall, it is still subject to regulatory approval.
