Here at Disney Food Blog, we may obsess over Disney, but we LOVE theme parks. If it has at least one ride, one food stand, and we can purchase tickets, someone on our team has probably gone and likely has the photos to prove it.
When you open your heart to lots of theme parks, unfortunately, you also welcome yourself to heartbreak. There are four theme parks that are permanently closing, leaving us feeling pretty sad as we see the gates close and the rides being removed. Let’s take a look at all the theme parks closing in 2025.
Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor
Located in Bowie, Maryland, both Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor will remain open till November 2nd. The CEO and president of Six Flags, Richard A. Zimmerman, said, “As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan.”
California’s Great America in Santa Clara, another Six Flags park, is also expected to close in 2027. The park has not decided whether to extend its lease, and Chief Financial Officer Brian Witherow said, “Unless we decide to extend, and exercise one of our options to extend that lease, that park’s last year without that extension would be after the ’27 season.” It’s likely not looking good if the Chief Financial Officer is discussing not extending.
Dixie Landin’ Theme Park and Blue Bayou
In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the park was open for two weeks, from May 23rd to June 2nd, before announcing it would close. The park had already announced that it wouldn’t reopen Blue Bayou, the water park, in the 2025 season. The park’s owner says that Blue Bayou might reopen next year, but Dixie Landin’ would be permanently closed due to a lack of attendance.
While this isn’t exactly a permanent closure, we wanted to give a special shoutout to Sesame Place San Diego, as it has always given us so much nostalgia. The park, dedicated to Sesame Street, closed its doors on September 21st and will remain closed until spring 2026. It’s set to be open on a seasonal basis, but most of our favorite attractions that undergo seasonal closures often end up being permanently closed years later. If Sesame Place San Diego is on your bucket list, we recommend visiting it in 2026, as we’re unsure how long it will remain a seasonal park.
We hate seeing so many theme parks close, but we’re always looking ahead to what’s next. Make sure you keep following Disney Food Blog for more.
