Uh…no one told us this should be something to worry about when traveling to Florida!

We recently saw a report from NEWS 6 that you’re going to want to keep your distance from a fuzzy-looking caterpillar. They dropped some info on why you do NOT want to touch these little creatures. We’re passing that information on to you in case you run into them on your next Disney World vacation!
If looking at pictures of bugs is something you can’t handle, we’re just giving you a warning that we are going to show you the Tussock moth caterpillar. You’ll find these little creatures in places like structures, trees, and more elevated spots as they look for places to have their cocoons.

You do not want to touch these guys, or you might develop a rash! If you’re in a situation where you have to move them, it’s recommended that you wear gloves or use an object like a business card to move them. Just make sure you avoid direct contact.

“They have little spines on them that can break off into your skin, causing irritation. They look like little brushes along their back, but those are the ones you don’t want to come into contact with,” said insect expert Adam Dale. If by chance you do come in contact with them, you can remove any hairs with tape, then wash the area with soap and water, and apply ice or a baking soda and water paste to soothe the skin.
If you happen to run into one at Disney World, head to First Aid where they should be able to help you out.

Just make sure to be careful when around them or where their cocoons are. Even their cocoons can have those irritating hairs! That also means you’ll want to clear the area of them once they become moths. If you see any cocoons, you can use a broom to remove them.

A few years ago my husband & I visited New Orleans. We’re from California. We were waiting outside at a picnic area for an air boat swamp tour we had scheduled and saw a bunch of these little guys on the picnic benches we were sitting at. Having no idea about them, I proceeded to let some crawl on my hands and arms, admiring their unique physique. It wasn’t until later in our trip that we learned that they can sting you! 😂
