We have some news at the Magic Kingdom! No, our beloved plastic cheese isn’t back, but there is a new melty, cheesy goodness available at Pecos Bill’s!
If you’re not familiar, Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Cafe is like a magical Chipotle serving fajitas, burritos, and rice bowls with a pretty extensive toppings bar in Frontierland. We also give it high marks for the delicious mini churros with a side of chocolate sauce!
It’s located right at the corner of Adventureland and Frontierland with a ton of indoor seating, so it’s a great place to relax and enjoy lunch — and maybe dry off after a trip through the Briar Patch at Splash Mountain!
But today, we’re here to talk about that new cheese, so let’s see what’s new!

So I was pretty jazzed when I saw that there was a new Queso Blanco listed on the menu at Pecos Bill’s. I’m a HUGE queso blanco fan, and I admit, I got my hopes up a little too high for this one. As many of you may have expected, this isn’t plastic cheese. Or even a cheese sauce “on the side.” It’s a pre-packaged cup of name brand cheese…that just happens to be, well, blanco.
You can order it as a side for $1, and though it’s not listed on the menu, you can also order with chips as a snack for $3.99.
Now, once we get over that it’s not quite what we wanted it to be and review it for what it is, it’s actually pretty tasty and the price is great for a mid-day snack or drizzle on fajitas. And it IS served warm, which I like.
It’s a Gehl’s brand product, and, according to the packaging and website, is made with real cheese. Gehl’s makes nacho cheeses that are served at stadiums and concession stands nationwide.
Even though it’s pre-packaged, I think it’s way better than the Ortega cheese option that appeared at Cosmic Ray’s after plastic cheese was discontinued. (FYI — the Ortega cheese has now been switched out for Gehl’s brand over at Cosmic Ray’s, so you get a better product there, now.)
This cheese has a smooth, creamy consistency with little bits of jalepenos mixed in. The pepper pieces don’t make the cheese spicy, but they do give it a nice flavor!
Since Pecos Bill has that wonderful toppings bar we mentioned earlier, you could even order the snack and head over to the bar to build your own nachos for a filling, inexpensive, and most importantly, yummy snack!
Oh, and while the chips are nothing fancy, they do the job.
Overall
Yes, I’m still bummed that it’s not plastic cheese and a little upset that it isn’t freshly made queso, but I honestly thought this was a pretty good option. Considering the price and size of the snack, it’s a great add on for your burrito or fajita or mid-day snack to share. I’m excited to head back there and make good use of that toppings bar, too!
If you want some better queso blanco, get it over at Cava del Tequila in Epcot’s Mexico. 🙂
Have you tried the Queso Blanco yet? Are you still mourning the plastic cheese? Let us know in the comments!

Hi AJ! I just love your blog! I was at Pecos Bills a few weeks ago and I had never been there before. OMG! I had the nachos and they were awesome! My only issue is that they didn’t come with cheese sauce. You had to use the shredded kind on the toppings bar. Not a deal breaker but I prefer melted cheese on my nachos. 🙂 While I’m sad about the plastic cheese going away, I can’t tell you how Happy I am that they stopped selling that Ortega brand. That stuff was so gross! This new brand of cheese is actually not bad. I would know because I use most of my snack credits for Mickey pretzels and cheese 🙂
By the way, I noticed that the date is missing from all your posts. Will that be returning? That information keeps me well informed!

I’m a newbie to WDW – only been going since 2012. What’s this “plastic cheese” that everyone seems to love?

I agree about missing the dates at the top of each post. It really helps me put a review in perspective. I always want to know if what I’m reading is the most current information. Thank you for your hard work; this is a great site!
