November 8th will be a HUGE day for the Walt Disney Company.
The company will hold its fourth-quarter earnings call for fiscal year 2023 this November. During that call, we’ll learn some important financial details about the company, including details about Disney+ subscriptions, future plans, and theme park revenue. However, the way that the company reports its theme park revenue has changed.
According to CNBC, Disney will report theme park revenue differently. Before, the company reported sales of merchandise and food and beverage as just one category, with merchandise licensing reported as another. Now, though, these numbers will be separated into three categories: parks and experience merchandise PLUS food and beverage, merchandise licensing and retail, and park licensing and other.
The theme park admissions and resorts and vacation categories will remain the same. A recent filing by Disney with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission shows that the theme parks had more than $24 billion in overall revenue for the first nine months of 2023, ending on July 1st. This is an increase of 17% over the first nine months of 2022. Nearly $8 billion of that was theme park admissions, up 21% from the same period in the previous year.
So, why did Disney make this change? Well, according to CNBC, “The [Wednesday] filing highlights that Disney’s theme park revenue continues to grow even as the overall theme park industry has slowdown in attendance and hotel room occupancy.” In alerting the way Disney reports its revenue, investors and analysts can see exactly what aspects of the company are succeeding.

Disney recently put a series of price increases in place at the parks, including food, Disney World Annual Passes, Disneyland tickets, and more. Also, Disney recently stated it had plans to invest $60 billion in its parks and with Disney Cruise Line. A lot of big projects have been announced, including a Magic Kingdom expansion, re-theming of an Animal Kingdom land, a new attraction at Disneyland, and more.
