Disney is bringing bigger meaning to the words “immersive” and “living land.”
Disney’s World of Frozen in Hong Kong brought us a whole new experience of interacting with the villagers inside Arendelle, creating a “living land.” Now, the brand new Zootopia land has opened at Shanghai Disney Resort and is giving us a glimpse into what it might be like to live in the mammalian city. And it turns out you can experience the citizens who live here, too!
In the new Zootopia land, you can ride the new ride Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, grab snacks at Jumbeaux’s Cafe, and buy merchandise at Fashions by Fru Fru! The land just opened on December 20th, and it looks amazing. It feels like you stepped right into the movie.
But there’s another all-new, one-of-a-kind experience in Zootopia that you won’t see anywhere else. A new show has premiered in the city, but it’s unlike any other show you’ve ever seen.
Unlike normal shows that have a set schedule and some form of theater, “Disney Zootopia Comes Alive” brings the characters to life along Mane Street at seemingly random times throughout the day.
At the Zootopia Park Apartments, the Hopps family, Fru Fru and her father Mr. Big, Koslov the polar bear, Flash the sloth, Yax the yak, Duke Weaselton, and more peak out on balconies and in windows of their homes and workplaces chatting with each other and people passing by.
Jeff Conover, Creative Director with Disney Live Entertainment, has been working on the project for over four years. He shared, “The idea is that as we walk into the land, we come across the characters living their daily lives. Our guests will be able to see the characters, and each time they show up, it may be a bit of a different story.”
Multiple storylines are brought together to create an immersive experience that occurs spontaneously throughout the day.
Disney Live Entertainment Production Manager Michelle Tritt stated, “What’s unique about this show is that it isn’t necessarily a show, it’s a living embodiment of the land. We’ve brought together various disciplines, from audio designers and lighting designers to creative specialists and production people, to work on the project, integrating the show into the land and creating a highly natural feel for the characters there.”
Regarding the land as a whole, Jeff also shared, “We want to give guests that firsthand emotional experience of being in Zootopia, in the middle of this vibrant community. There are so many little surprises. You could probably spend four hours in that land just walking around and looking at all the little details.”
We can’t wait to explore this new interactive and “vibrant community.” It’s amazing how immersed in the movie you become. Seeing Judy Hopps is going to be the best day ever! (But, honestly, we just want to use these new bathrooms!)
