Disney made a few HUGE announcements recently. Attention, all you Disney fans, we’ve got some GREAT news.
Although we already knew that Zootopia, Frozen, and Toy Story 5 were on the way, Disney just shared some NEW timelines for these projects. We even got a few theme park announcements. Perhaps the most surprising announcement, though, was about a movie that NO ONE knew about called Moana 2. Even stranger is that Moana 2 is coming out in theaters later this year! Say what? Well, now we’re getting news that one of the original stars from the first movie could be back for the second.
Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that Disney was so enamored with the Disney+ Moana series that was in progress that the company decided to turn it into a feature-length film instead. Now, we would think that the voice cast for the series would have already been set since the movie is premiering this November, but it sounds like that might not be the case.
In fact, Disney announced that the film is set to be released on November 27th, 2024, yet according to Deadline, Dwayne Johnson is “in talks” to return as Maui for the sequel. Even more perplexing is that the Moana voice actress Auli’i Cravalho has not confirmed she will join the project. Deadline reports that the actress is “in talks, but they aren’t as close as Johnson’s.”
In an interview with ET, Dwayne Johnson commented on the new sequel. “It’s very exciting. I can’t wait for fans to see the film, the technology, the effects, cutting edge,” Johnson explained. “We all really went for it. We thought if we’re gonna make a sequel to something so beloved, let’s really go for it.” Additionally, we know that Lin Manuel Miranda will NOT be returning to write the music for the sequel. Disney dropped the first teaser trailer for the film, which you can see below.

In addition, it seems like the live-action Moana movie is also still in the works, although it looks like it might get pushed back in light of this release. Johnson will both star and produce that movie, but Cravalho will not return as Moana, although she will act as an executive producer on the film.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for more Moana 2 updates, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
