Southwest Airlines is a favorite when it comes to low fares and great service.
Well, the service is usually great. Southwest has taken quite a bit of heat recently — starting with the mass cancellations that ensued throughout the holiday season in 2022. With those cancellations in mind, we got a bit of a flash back over the past weekend when we were faced with LOTS of delays and cancellations when traveling with Southwest. Let’s talk about it!
On March 9th, 201 Southwest flights were delayed at the Orlando Airport, which made up 54 percent of its daily flights. 53 flights were cancelled.
However, the issues didn’t stop in Orlando! One of our editors was in the process of flying to Las Vegas from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her scheduled flight was for 3:35PM, but after arriving to the airport at 1PM, the flight had been pushed back until 10:30. Then it changed to 5:30, then it changed to 7:10, and THEN she boarded the plane and had to sit on the tarmac until 7:50 due to crowded air space.
They were told that the FAA had shut things down because of weather, which in turn caused backed up airports and then crowded airspace when those started taking off again.
If you were involved in the delays over the weekend, you should be on the lookout for an email from Southwest! The email backs up what the flight attendants told the passengers over the weekend — weather had caused delays which backed up air traffic. To remedy the situation, Southwest sent passengers a $100 Southwest LUV voucher!
Be on the lookout for an email from Southwest if you were involved in any of the delays that occurred in the Southeast this past weekend. We’ll be sure to keep you updated with more travel news here so that you’re always in the loop!

This wasn’t just a Southwest problem. Everybody that wanted to fly in the affected airspace, airlines, military and general aviation was delayed.
