Ever since Disney World got rid of its complimentary Magical Express airport transportation service, fans have been searching for alternate ways to get to the resort.
When traveling from the airport, there are several different paid services you could take, and there was once talk of a Brightline rail station at Disney Springs, though that project was scrapped. But now, it turns out that the idea of a train station in Disney World might not be impossible.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, SunRail is hoping to expand in the Central Florida area and has presented a plan for such an expansion. The plan would boost ridership sixfold in the first year of operation but would cost an estimated $4 billion.
The plan received mixed thoughts from local officials when presented. Still, officials agree that SunRail needs connections at both the airport and popular tourist destinations in order to succeed with this plan. The proposed “Sunshine Corridor” project has drawn support from Universal Orlando, but where does Disney World stand?
Among the options listed, the Sunshine Corridor study unveiled Thursday depicts riders and costs associated with a stop at Disney Springs.
“In the past, Disney has expressed to the department that they are very interested in expanding SunRail to Disney,” said John Tyler, secretary of Florida’s Department of Transportation’s Central Florida district. “We have continued to focus on getting a connection to that point. It makes sense from a transportation standpoint and we have no reason to believe we shouldn’t be pursuing that.”
The project has a few hurdles to cross before official plans can be made to put a station in or near Disney World. The Sunshine Corridor initiative will first need to provide a project development and environment study, which could cost about $6 million. The biggest concern at the moment is where the money for this massive project will come from.
We’ll keep an eye out for any updates about this possible transportation expansion, so stay tuned to DFB for the latest.
