NEWS: A Florida-Based Airline Has Filed for Bankruptcy Protection

When it comes to planning your ultimate Disney trip, there are lots of things to take into consideration like flights, hotels, and more! One change to be aware of? One Florida-based airline has filed for bankruptcy.

Last month, December 2024, Silver Airways filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. According to The Orlando Business Journal, Silver Airways filed after several years of debts and losses due to the Covid-19 pandemic according to the filing.

The airline listed up to $500 million in debt and assets and cited the rising cost of fuel, labor, and parts as additional issues as well as the losses during the pandemic. They also noted that leisure travel has declined as well as multimillion-dollar damages to one of their aircraft.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection is a formal process that will allow Silver Airways to continue operating while the company reorganizes its debts. The airline wrote an open letter to their customers explaining their choice and reassured customers that all current tickets will be honored and that additional flights can still be booked.

The airline is based in Hollywood, Florida, and was the 22nd largest airline at MCO in 2023. This is the second large airline to file for bankruptcy after Spirit Airlines filed in November 2024.
