It can be a confusing time, as on-and-off tariffs could affect travel trends.
There have been rising concerns about rising prices due to tariffs, and travel may be put on the back burner for some Americans. This could actually cause prices to fall as tourist industries start offering discounts and promotional deals to attract consumers and vacationers. Could this also mean that flights could become cheaper?
According to the New York Times, tariffs could increase the cost of building a plane, but there are more immediate concerns for air carriers on the horizon. Brian Sumers, who writes for the Airline Observer, said that due to economic uncertainty, people get worried, which causes them to spend less money as “they don’t know how their investments will hold up, or whether they will have a job in six months, and so they hold off on planning travel and buying plane tickets.”
Back in March, Bank of America analysts found that domestic travel was not off to a strong start in 2025. This, of course, can be attributed to bad weather, a late Easter, and falling consumer confidence. While this is still developing, airlines are planning to trim capacity to maintain prices; as Delta Airlines said, “it would reduce planned capacity growth in the second half of the year.” Sumers continued to go on to see that he expects prices to fall and more empty seats on planes. It is also expected that discounted carriers like Froniter Airlines may feel the effects of this travel change more.
CNBC reports that Froniter Airlines, along with Delta, have started to cut flights due to the fleeting demand that happened in March. Frontier said that “Revenue growth is anticipated to be lower than expected due to weakened demand in March, resulting in fare discounting and promotions across the industry, amplified by the close-in nature of Frontier’s bookings.”
So what does this mean for you? Well, if the uncertainty around a potential recession continues, other airlines may join Froniter in cutting ticket costs and running discounted promotions, which could mean cheaper flights for you!
