One of Disney World’s busiest rides is ALMOST ready to restart its engine.
EPCOT’s Test Track has been closed for refurbishment since June 2024, as Disney Imagineering transforms the attraction into a third incarnation. We’ve known since the D23 Ultimate Fan event last August that the attraction would be reopening sometime in the summer of 2025, and now things seem to be revving up.
After a long, problematic period of construction Test Track – – which replaced the original EPCOT attraction World of Motion – – first opened in March of 1999. The high-speed run through a realistic representation of a General Motors proving ground was EPCOT’s first E-Ticket thrill attraction, and kickstarted a new era of the park, for better or worse.
The original Test Track closed in April of 2012, reopening that December in a new version, which fans dubbed Test Track 2.0. This refresh features a sponsorship shift from General Motors overall to Chevrolet (which is still under the same corporate umbrella) as well as storyline alterations which saw riders “designing” their own vehicle and an overall new color scheme and aesthetic. Test Track 2.0 operated for over a decade before closing in 2024 to make room for this latest refurbishment.
The upcoming new version of the attraction, unofficially (and unsurprisingly) dubbed Test Track 3.0 by fans is going to “push innovation forward and celebrate humanity’s enduring drive (pun intended) on the thrilling road to a brighter tomorrow” according to Disney at D23 last year.
Furthermore, the new version of the ride will “celebrate today’s innovation while highlighting the past, present, and future.” This will begin in the queue, which will be made up of six distinct exhibits that “celebrate the vehicles – and people behind the vehicles – that push the envelope and help get people to our next chapter in our motion journey.”
The ride itself will feature new show scenes that “showcase technological advances and how our lifestyles and relationships to mobility connect everyone,” including a “trip through a scenic outdoor route reminding us all of the joys of driving, taking in the world around us and spending quality time with friends and family.” In addition, the ride will supposedly include some elements inspired by the original World of Motion.
As spring of 2025 runs to summer, progress is speeding along (no, we couldn’t resist) continues. In recent weeks, the majority of construction scaffolding came down. In addition, Disney aired another Instagram post that featured the ride vehicles along with the caption, “Test Track vehicles are back on the track with updated graphics. Come into the garage with the graphics fabrication team for a closer look. 🚗✨ Opening at EPCOT in late summer 2025.”
Work is progressing quickly on the new version of Test Track, which is scheduled to open at EPCOT in late summer. Stay tuned to DFB for further coverage of the opening.
