UPDATE: As of July 31st, Tsunami Warnings have been lifted.
An 8.7 earthquake occurred near the coast of Russia on July 29th, prompting tsunami warnings in Alaska, Hawaii, and other areas along the West Coast.

The National Weather Service reported that the tsunami is currently estimated to arrive as early as 12:15 AM on July 30th.
The National Weather Service warns that tsunami waves could reach more than three meters above the tide level along the coasts of Ecuador and Russia, while tsunami waves could reach between one (3.28 feet) and three meters (9.8 feet) above the tide level along the coasts of Chile, Hawaii, Japan, and the Solomon Islands.

As of July 29th, a warning was announced for Alaska’s Aleutian Islands and Hawaii, while California, Oregon, and Washington are under a tsunami watch. Per the National Weather Service, a Tsunami Warning indicates that a tsunami that may cause widespread flooding is expected or is occurring. A Tsunami Watch states that a distant earthquake has occurred, and a tsunami is possible. Residents are advised to be prepared to take action if necessary.

The first tsunami wave is forecast to reach Hawaii just after 7:15 PM local time, per ABC News. Additionally, a recent NWS alert stated, “The danger can continue for many hours after the initial wave as subsequent waves arrive. Tsunami heights cannot be predicted and the first wave may not be the largest.”

An emergency alert was issued to Hawaiian residents, stating, “Due to the Tsunami WARNING and wave arrival time of 7:10 PM HST, of Hanalei. We are sounding the sirens of Alert to the public of possible flooding inundation zones.” An advisory was also issued for Japan’s Pacific Coast regions from Hokkaido to Kyushu.

Keep in mind that tsunami warnings, advisories, and watches may be updated or canceled as new reports are available.
