Although flying can be the most convenient way to get somewhere, say, like Disney World, it sometimes has its downsides.
First, there are often long security lines to deal with, although a little preparation…or TSA PreCheck…can help with that. Then, there are often delays, generally caused by weather, that you have no control over. Sometimes, though, an airline must suspend all flights due to other reasons, like technical issues or an employee strike. According to CNN, Air Canada did just that — suspended all flights — due to a flight attendant strike.
UPDATE: As of the morning of Sunday, August 17th, 2025, ABC News reported that Air Canada would resume flights on Sunday evening, though it will take “several days before its operations return to normal.”
More than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants went on strike this morning after a deadline to reach a deal with the airline passed. Shortly after that, Air Canada announced that it would suspend operations, meaning that if you had plans to fly with the airline today, they’ve been canceled.
The strike happened after a contract fight between Air Canada and the flight attendants’ union escalated as the union denied the airline’s request to seek arbitration directed by the government (which would have ended the strike and permitted a third party to decide the terms of a new contract). According to the union and the airline, the key issues are pay and unpaid work that flight attendants do when planes aren’t in the air.
Air Canada operates around 700 flights per day, and the complete shutdown of Air Canada could affect around 130,000 people per day, leaving many passengers stranded. Even if a tentative deal is reached, it could take up to a week to fully restart operations. Those whose travel will be impacted can request a full refund on the airline’s website or mobile app. Air Canada also stated it would offer alternative travel options through other airlines, if possible, but warned it could not guarantee immediate rebooking because this is happening during the summer travel peak.
