Spirit Airlines has been struggling a bit since it filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last year. Since then, it recently filed for bankruptcy a second time.
As a result, the airline has been taking a hard look at the cities it serves and has already cut many routes to popular cities. Recently, though, the airline announced it would be cutting even MORE routes to popular cities, according to CBS News.
Spirit Airlines, which is based in Florida, recently confirmed that it would cut routes to and from the following cities as of October 2nd:
- Albuquerque, NM
- Birmingham, AL
- Boise, ID
- Chattanooga, TN
- Oakland, CA
- Columbia, SC
- Portland, OR
- Sacramento, CA
- Salt Lake City, UT
- San Diego, CA
- San Jose, CA
The company also confirmed it would cancel plans to launch service in Macon, GA, which was set to start on October 16th. In an email statement, the company wrote: “We apologize to our Guests for any inconvenience this may cause and will reach out to those with affected reservations to notify them of their options, including a refund.”
Spirit is attempting to cut its costs by eliminating routes that don’t bring in a lot of money. Just last month, the company claimed it had “substantial doubt” about staying in business, citing less demand for leisure travel as well as “adverse market conditions.”
Other airlines have recently swooped in to grab some of the routes that Spirit is dropping, including United Airlines and Frontier Airlines.
