Spirit Airlines is cutting its network in an attempt to trim unprofitable routes after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last November.
According to The Street, the airline is cutting 12 domestic routes between several popular cities.
Spirit Airlines has already begun phasing out these routes, which include flights between cities like Atlanta and New York, Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, and New Orleans and San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition, flights to San Jose, and Oakland from Burbank, and flights from Los Angeles to Reno, Salt Lake City, and San Jose.
In a statement, a company spokesperson said they “routinely evaluate our network and make adjustments to support the company’s business strategy based on current market and operating conditions.”
Some of these cuts are seasonal winter or spring flights that are not being renewed, while other flights are being cut due to poor ticket sales.
The spokesperson continued, “As part of this process, we adjusted our upcoming schedule to focus on our strongest performing routes in alignment with our current fleet size.”
For now, it looks like most routes to Florida are safe, aside from a New York to West Palm Beach flight.
In a court filing, the company has listed its assets and liabilities between $1 billion and $10 billion. Currently, Spirit Airlines plans to continue operating, and customers can continue to book tickets.
In recent times, Spirit has struggled with an engine recall that grounded dozens of jets, higher costs after the pandemic, and a failed acquisition of JetBlue Airways. Shares of Spirit Airlines have fallen more than 90% over the past year.
If you’re planning on flying Spirit Airlines soon, you may have to deal with fewer flights to choose from.
