Disney World’s rules and regulations won’t be changing soon, despite a recent judicial ruling in Florida.
As the national dialogue over gun laws continues, the ban on the open carry of firearms in Florida was overturned, leading to some massive changes statewide. With that said, some exceptions were noted, and Disney World falls into that category.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier declared that open carry is the “law of the state” after a panel of appellate judges ruled that restrictions on the open carry of firearms in the state are unconstitutional. However, the court did rule that private businesses — like the Walt Disney World Resort — are exempt and can still enforce their own policies.
As such, Disney has not adjusted its rules, and there is no indication it plans to do so. When responding to the ruling, Disney highlighted that guests “are not permitted to have firearms, ammunition, knives or weapons of any kind at Walt Disney World Resort.”
That ban on firearms extends to all four theme parks, the two water parks, Disney Springs, and the Disney hotels.
As always, compliance with the rules is fully expected from all guests. Failure to do so can result in temporary or permanent bans, as well as potential involvement from law enforcement.
Yes, carrying a gun at Disney World can still lead to legal trouble, despite the lifting of the ban. According to Orange County Sheriff John Mina, “You cannot carry openly or concealed in most government buildings, college campuses, or passenger terminals at airports.” He added that, “private property owners can still prohibit anyone from carrying firearms onto their properties and trespass anyone who violates that rule.”
While Mina didn’t mention Disney World by name, he did reference theme parks as part of those private properties.
If you plan on traveling to Disney World soon, please be aware of all the changes — and lack of changes — happening in the state and its theme parks before your visit. We’ll continue to keep you posted on all the latest news and travel tips, so keep it posted right here at DFB to stay in the know.
