Fans of Southwest Airlines are about to be rewarded in a big way!
Southwest has been no stranger to controversial changes. However, recent adjustments like the addition of free Wi-Fi for Rapid Rewards members are softening the blow, and now some newly announced perks should make Southwest Rapid Rewards members happy!
In October, Southwest announced that it will offer a new way for customers to earn Rapid Rewards points (Southwest’s rewards program)Â on everyday purchases with the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Debit Card.
In an official statement, Southwest revealed that the Visa debit card is powered by Galileo and “combines the convenience of debit payments with the benefits of Rapid Rewards.”
Southwest EVP Chief Customer and Brand Officer Tony Roach acknowledged that “more than 90% of Americans [are] using debit cards,” and the airline is looking to expand the Rapid Rewards loyalty program to include a debit card to accommodate that trend. “Whether it’s a college student looking to book a flight to watch their favorite team, a parent setting up an account for a recent graduate, or a cash-savvy Customer looking for another way to earn rewards, the Rapid Rewards Debit Card offers unlimited options to turn everyday spending into that next Southwest flight.”
Benefits — according to the statement — include:
- A welcome bonus: Cardmembers can “enjoy a 2,500-point welcome bonus with two recurring deposits and $100 spend in the first 90 days.”
- Unlimited points on everyday spending: Cardmembers can “earn 1 point per $2 spent on everyday purchases, plus 1 point per $1 spent on Southwest Airlines purchases, dining, and subscriptions, including internet, phone, streaming services, and utilities.”
- Companion Pass bonus: Cardmembers can “receive a 7,500 Companion Pass bonus each year. All points earned with the debit card count toward Companion Pass, including the welcome bonus offer.”
- Annual perks and travel credit: Cardmembers can “receive up to 7,500 bonus points on the Cardmember anniversary, an annual 20% off promotion code, and an annual $35 Southwest credit.”
- Simple signup and waived fees: “No credit check is required to sign up, there are no fees to withdraw from ATMs within the Cirrus network, and the monthly fee is waived.”
Customers can sign up at southwestdebit.com.
Best of all, points earned on the Southwest Rapid Rewards Debit Card never expire. Additionally, there are no blackout dates, and members can use points for any seat.
Rapid Rewards Members also receive tier benefits and free in-flight WiFi and can “earn and redeem points for hotels, rental cars, vacations, and more.” More of the terms and fine print can be found on the Southwest website.
