There’s been a LOT of change in the aviation industry recently, and if you’ve had trouble keeping track, not to worry — that’s why we’re here!
We’ve been keeping up with all the latest changes when it comes to flying, so you don’t have to. We’ve got the latest information on Real IDs and flying, Southwest’s seating changes, American Airlines’ changes to their rewards program, and more. If you’re flying with Southwest soon, it was announced back in September that the size of lithium batteries onboard would start on January 11th, which means that day has finally come.
Starting tomorrow, January 11th, lithium batteries brought on board can not exceed 300 watt-hours. The change comes after a number of fires on planes, all caused by lithium batteries. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that there were 89 lithium-ion battery-related events on flights in 2024. Previously, Southwest implemented a rule that mobile charging devices must be visible when being used on a flight, and the use of these devices is prohibited when stored in carry-on bags or overhead bins.
Back on September 25th, wheelchair and scooter users began needing to remove the lithium batteries from their devices before boarding. At the time, Dave Hunt, Southwest’s Vice President of Safety and Security, said this was being implemented “to enhance safety and align with international standards, further protecting our customers and our crew members.”
