With the release of Moana 2 in 2024 and the live-action Moana this week, it’s no surprise that we received news of another movie in this franchise in the works.

At a recent press conference, Dwayne Johnson — who plays Maui in both the animated and live-action films — teased the addition of a third Moana film, and we’re here to tell you everything we know!

At a promotional event in Brazil for the live-action Moana, Dwayne Johnson confirmed that a third movie for the franchise is in the making. In a recent article published by Variety, Johnson was quoted as saying, “Yes, we have talked about Moana 3, yes. But first, live-action Moana, we’ll let that come out first. We have [the] amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers…they will pen Moana 3.”

Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho are expected to return to their roles as Maui and Moana, respectively. The plot details have yet to be revealed for the third film [SPOILER ALERT FOR MOANA 2 AHEAD]…

…but we can guess that it will follow Moana’s journey as a demigod after her restoration turned transition at the end of Moana 2. The songwriter for the third film is also unclear at this point — Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote several hit songs for the first film, but didn’t return for the second, passing the songwriting duties to Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear.

We’re excited to see what’s to come from this new film, but in the meantime, head to your local theatre starting July 10th to return to the fictional island of Motunui for Disney’s live-action remake of the original film! And stay tuned to Disney Food Blog for more Disney news and updates.
