There have been A LOT of travel rule changes recently, including what you can bring in your carry-on bag, airlines moving from open seating to assigned seating, and now they’re charging for overhead bin space!
That’s right… What is a budget-friendly option for a lot of travelers is now becoming more expensive on one airline. They are now charging passengers for their carry-on luggage, and we have everything you need to know.
According to the New York Times, Jetstar Airways — a low-cost Australian airline — is now charging its customers for any luggage that does not fit under the seat. Guests bringing carry-on bags that fit inside the measurement requirements for under-the-seat storage won’t have to pay, but if your bag is larger than the given measurements or you’re bringing on carry-on luggage, you’ll have to pay extra!
Depending on the flight route, passengers may be charged anywhere from AU$25 to AU$52 — or $18 to $37 USD — to stow larger bags, and this is only the cost for a one-way flight. So, if you have a round-trip flight, expect to pay AU$50 to AU$104, or $36 to $74 USD.
To make it easier for guests, Jetstar is introducing a new “Priority Carry-on” option for pre-purchase, which lets you pay for your carry-on and includes early boarding access. This is a great option if you already know your carry-on bag won’t fit underneath the seat.
The airline has also increased the weight limit of carry-on bags from 15 pounds to 22 pounds. Stephanie Tully, Jetstar’s Chief Executive Officer, explains that this change will help flights depart on time, streamline boarding, and make the best use of overhead bin space. These changes came from “extensive research and feedback from customers and crew,” who found it hard to find room in the overhead compartments.
The policy will begin in February 2027. We’re always posting about the latest travel news and updates, so stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for more.
