There’s been another change to the menu at Satu’li Canteen in Animal Kingdom’s Pandora.
The most recent change delivered an addition to the menu: new Combination Bowls offer guests the opportunity to get both chicken and beef in their Satu’li Bowls. This new change, however, involves the removal of an item.
Vegetable Curry “Pods” (otherwise known as Bao Buns outside of Pandora) are no longer on the menu.
Guests can still purchase the Cheeseburger Steamed Pods.
But vegetarian guests will be relying on the Chili-Spiced Crispy Fried Tofu Bowl as their primary option. (Pescatarians may also choose the Sustainable Fish Bowl).
I’m a little bummed to see them go. I enjoy curry and found the Curry Pods to be a fun option, along with adding another creative vegetarian choice in Animal Kingdom. But I’m more curious to know… what do you think of the change?

Seems like a pretty direct slap in the face to Vegetarian guests, to remove one of only two available items, and by far the most unique one at any counter service location in the parks. And especially to not replace it with anything, let alone a different vegetarian item.
They recently brought the lighthouse sandwich back to Columbia Harbor House. Maybe eventually they’ll wake up and restore this one as well.
WHY!? We need more vegan/vegetarian choices! Not less Disney! These were awesome, they will be missed.
I’ve read somewhere that the vegetable curry pods weren’t vegan, but seriously, they were absolutely delicious and were one of the best items on the menu!!! Tofu is yucky. I’m super bummed that I can’t get them in a few weeks when I head down.
I am not a vegetarian but wanted to try this dish since I love curry. They were very very bland IMO. They got them in frozen from a vendor so could not change the recipe. Very disappointing that the dish has the potential of being very good and different but is executed poorly. I will stick to the curry vegi dish at Yak and Yeti.
Paul, I agree. They got rid of the veggie crab cakes from the Flower and Garden festival. And now this? They are going in the opposite direction of where they should be going. Vegetarian palettes are on the rise! Why aren’t the dishes?
The vegetable curry pods were delicious and a different option than the usual tofu. Sorry to see them go and hoping they’ll come back to the menu! Will be there in September and was planning to order these.
Simple. If they aren’t selling they won’t stay on the menu. They obviously weren’t selling. I
Why!!! My daughter is a vegetarian and LOVES this meal. Now, her option is tofu? She hates tofu.
I really do wish they had at least replaced the Root Vegetable Curry Pods with another vegetarian – or even better, vegan – option. Why have they kept the Cheeseburger Pods?!
On a happier note, veg (and omnivore) guests can go over to Nomad Lounge for the Impossible Burger Slider duo! Woo-hoo!
I was so thrilled to see the return of the Lighthouse Sandwich at CHH. It is one of my fave veg counter service items and something unique to that dining location…nice to see a change from the typical homogeneous CS food and merch across property. We want resort-specific food and merch offerings (including refillable mugs)!
I know that the “average” Disney guest prefers bland, unseasoned food (which explains why ADRs at Skipper Canteen, Jiko, and Sanaa are not terribly hard to get), but what about the rest of us?!
It’s simply a cost thing for Disney. Vegetarian and vegan entrees tend to be the least well-selling in almost all restaurants that aren’t dedicated to vegetarians so, they’re frequently the first to go when menus are revamped. Less than 4% of Americans are vegetarian and less than half of 1% are vegans. Virtually every vegetarian I’ve ever known (including myself for ten years) cheats on their diet, especially on vacation. Put those numbers together and there just aren’t that many people clamoring for vegetarian and vegan food while they’re on vacation at an amusement park.
As for these pods, they were pre-made, frozen, and incredibly bland. No loss IMO. The bowls on the other hand are very good, including the tofu.
Off topic, bur there’s now a vegan brat at friar nook in MK on the secret menu!
I liked them and am bummed too that they are gone. Not a big reason to head there for a meal.
Virtually every vegetarian I know does not cheat on their diet, even on vacation. I am guessing most of the ones you know aren’t really vegetarian but like the idea of saying they are vegetarian.
Plus, we need to keep in mind that while the percentages may be low in the US, Disney attracts large numbers of visitors from around the world.
As a real vegetarian, this is a bit disappointing, but I will still try the tofu, as that sounds delicious.. plus, I found the curry at Yak and Yeti to be a bit underwhelming. And it is important to remember that while ordering off the menu is way more convenient, many of the restaurants around Disney can adapt dishes for vegetarians (thought this applies more to made-to-order than counter restaurants)
That’s really disappointing, my daughter was really looking forward to these when we arrive next week.
Really disappointing!
I’m torn – I hate losing another vegetarian option (vegan family of 4) but these were just not executed well. I hope they bring in another option in the future.
Also, I’d hazard a guess that the percentage of vegetarians/vegans Disney visitors is higher than the general population as Disney attracts middle and higher income visitors who might be more likely to be vegetarian. Many people who are not strictly vegetarian enjoy veggie options.
Yes I am VERY sad that they got rid of the curry pods!!!! They were sooooo delicious and offered me a vegetarian almost vegan a chance to actually have something to eat and others in my party something to eat (with the meat meals)
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS WAS THE BEST THING IN THE WHOLE PARK! I loved it so much! I’d eat it twice each visit since Pandora came out. They’ve been doing a terrible job with vegetarian options lately, removing amazing dishes and replacing them with bad ones or nothing at all. All the recent menu changes at California Adventure have been the worst. I’m so sad. I tried the bowl at Satu’li and it was passable but nothing compared to the veggie curry buns. This is so disappointing. Who do they have making these decisions on vegetarian foods?
To the person saying Vegetarians cheat on vacation that is absurd and disgusting. Morality doesn’t go out the window on vacation.
I’m very disappointed they took away the veggie curry pods. They were the best tasting item we had from this restaurant. I would say, though, that all of their pods are sort of dry and really need some kind of a sauce unless they can fix that issue. Now it just looks silly on the menu as well, because there is a “pod” section, but…there is only one pod, so why even give that its own portion of the menu? Just add it to entrees and be done with it. I think they should also have the bowls set up, not a create your own to expedite things, but that’s just my opinion. We’ll go back here and try the tofu I guess 🙁
Matthew, people have different reasons for choosing their diets. Morality is not the only reason to adopt a vegetarian diet. Just within my own small family, my brother has an allergy; I find that I simply feel better all-around when meat is eliminated; and my sister is a vegan for moral reasons. Let’s try to support each other, instead of judging, and come together to encourage Disney to provide a wide range of veggie options – regardless of our individual reasoning!
The vegetarian curry pods were delicious! However I feel like they got rid of them due to mixing them up with the cheeseburger pods. While I’m not vegetarian, last time I visited the restaurant I noticed that they had switched the curry pods with the cheeseburger pods. I went up to the register and told them – and were joined by actual vegetarian guests who were upset that they had ingested beef. The workers immediately went out to the cafe floor and began rounding up as many of the fake veggie pods as they could. It was a big fiasco. Only serving bowls will ensure that something like this won’t happen again – I will definitely miss them though.
Well, rats, missed my chance. It was bad enough when they removed the Lighthouse Sandwich from Columbia Harbor House (which seems to be back), but I was kind of hoping this particular location, given the overall theme, would have more than one vegetarian option. I did try the tofu bowl last year and thought it was pretty good, although the tofu cubes were small and didn’t add a lot of heft to the bowl. Maybe they’ll come up with some other kind of veggie filling for the buns and bring them back.
I ate there once and will never go back. I’m too picky of an eater to begin with and was way outside my comfort zone even trying the restaurant. LOL. But I did it!!! Many times I’ll have the vegetarian meal so I’m sad it’s gone for those who loved it. Too often it’s either tofu (which I will NOT eat due to its texture) or a skimpy side salad. Disney needs to step it up
This is extremely disappointing news. My teenage daughter is a vegetarian and there are already so few options at WDW for her. Totally bummed for her! She loved these buns! And she definitely doesn’t cheat on vacation!!!
These were my favorite!!! I went to this restaurant specifically for them. Being a vegetarian, travel is tricky and just because there is a vegetarian option on the menu, doesn’t mean that a vegetarian will love it. I .org ten have to settle. But I really loved these pods and am sad I’ll have to settle rather than really enjoy my food. Oh well. Here’s hoping that Disney changes their minds on this one.
Just discovered the veggie pods are gone. Super super disappointed. Also now only the kid cheeseburger pod exists ( they changed the menu today )
I was there a couple of weeks ago ad I tried the tofu bowl with the red & sweet potato hash base and creamy herb dressing and it was amazingly delicious. There are 2 other non-creamy dressing choices if you prefer…
