Disney World opens this weekend, but that doesn’t mean it’s simple to travel there.
Florida is currently under a State of Emergency and has been since March 9th. Recently, a quarantine order was put in place that mandates all travelers from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut must quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Florida. As you can imagine, this can be an obstacle to heading to Disney World.
The State of Emergency and quarantine order were both set to expire today, but now Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has filed an executive order to extend the State of Emergency by 60 more days.
According to Fox 35 Orlando, DeSantis issued an order to extend the State of Emergency through September 5th. Since the expiration of the quarantine order is contingent on the expiration of the State of Emergency, the travel restrictions are extended as well.
As of now, any travelers from New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut will be subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine through September 5th. This order is subject to change; we may see another extension or we may see an order to let it expire early depending on the health crisis.

Academic and professional travel is exempt from the order but leisure trips (such as one to Disney World) are very much affected. For now, guests from these states should keep an eye on Florida news as a quarantine may keep them from visiting the parks.
We will be checking in on this situation often so stay tuned to DFB for the latest updates on the travel restrictions.

What about the NBA? Are they banned? Such a load of garbage.
Nick says
Not to question your story but I can’t find anything on any florida news sites about the travel ban being extended.
cari says
Doesn’t affect my travel plans, yet, to Disney, but … Connecticut has a lower infection rate for the virus than Florida. Connecticut doesn’t want Floridians coming to Connecticut with their rate of infection of the virus and those Floridians keep coming north. All those license plates from Florida on our streets and highways will probably raise the infection rate here. Stay home Floridians.
DFB Sarah says
Hi, Nick! The quarantine is attached to the State of Emergency, which is what the Governor extended yesterday. So at present, the quarantine appears to be in effect for that extension unless it’s ended by a separate executive order.
Elaine Vogel says
This is nothing more than political pingpong. Why isn’t the order extended to states that show alarming increases such as Texas, Arizona and most of the South? Those are the ones he should be concerned about. Oh well, I’ll just spend my money in my home state this year.
CeCe says
What a joke. The northeast is the only area in the USA that has the virus under control, but the Florida Governor has to throw a temper tantrum because the tri-state has a travel ban and quarantine on HIS state because the infection rates are sky high there! If anything, rrsidents from CT, NY, NJ, MA & RI are the only ones that should be allowed anywhere right now. Does Florida have a ban on the CURRENT states that do not have COVID under control? These states are: AL, AR, AZ, CA, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, KS, LA, MS, NC, NV, OK, SC, TN, TX & UT. The CT hospital I work at is not allowing anyone from these states, or locals who recently traveled to these states in as visitors without a 14 day quarantine. Florida needs to stay up to date with the current information. Not base their recommendations on info from March/April. All these people from other states with high infection are going to be allowed in and then watch the rates climb even higher in Florida once Disney re-opens.
PIGPEN1 says
We have the same problem in New Jersey. Tons of Florida plates. Not really fair if you think about it.
I guess the NBA and Soccer Leagues are exempt from spreading the virus.
Jonathan says
The news that came out yesterday is so disappointing. We had been planning a trip in late August for a long time now and was waiting for this “ban” from the tri-state area to expire yesterday and instead it was extended through Sept. 5th. My only solace is that we kept it as a surprise for my children who at least won’t be disappointed since they didn’t know they were going. Seems like there was no thought put into the extension as people from states with significantly higher cases of the virus are permitted to go but we are not. I understand that Disney is hamstrung in this situation, but I wish they could do more to help out. So unfair and biased. Love the videos though….keep doing what you’re doing!
MJ says
I was so excitedly waiting for the tri-state restriction to expire on the 7th and never expected a 60 day extension! I agreed with this precaution initially. Now I don’t feel the 60 day extension is warranted. I cancelled for the last week in August.
Alex R says
The NBA is also going through a quarantine period which includes multiple testing periods before they are allowed to start life in their new bubble.
Testing is done before the players leave for Florida. They isolate each team and do another couple rounds of testing. After that they are cleared to start their NBA activities.
Brenda says
So what are the chances of Disney giving us an additional refund on our annual passes for the time that they are open but the governor essentially won’t let us visit? No chance that I can extend my 1 week vacation to 3 weeks to sit out the quarantine. I am from South Jersey- No huge outbreak here.
Lucille Mislivets says
I’m comin g from Connecticut. How far in advance should I get a covid19 test in order to visit disney world, and should i show proof that this was done. (I’m starting to think…just cancel the damn vacation, which I don’t want to do!)
Toni Nolan says
The Governor is no doubt jealous of NY-NJ-CT lower percentages while the ones in his state are climbing.
Adam says
Jackie, the NBA and MLS is exempt from this 14 day quarantine as outlined by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Erin says
Is this retaliatory? Because those states are doing better than many others (including Florida), and the ones that they should have on the list are not included. It seems totally pointless to do this.
DFB Sarah says
Lucille, our understanding is you’ll need to quarantine for 14 days, test or not. But perhaps the State of Florida has a number you can call to get clarification on that.
DFB Sarah says
Brenda, not sure. You could try reaching out to Disney.
DFB Sarah says
Thanks, Jonathan. The Governor could lift the quarantine by executive order before September 5 (or lift the State of Emergency sooner), but there’s no guarantee or even a rumor he might do that, unfortunately.
Beth W says
How are they insuring that those who come into the state are indeed quarantining for the 14 days. how are they enforcing this?
DFB Sarah says
Beth, we don’t know.
Dottie says
It’s amazing that NJ is required to quarantine for 14 days when we are one of the “green” states that has things under control. What are they going to do to you if you don’t quarantine?
