Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan was originally set to premiere in movie theaters back on March 27th, but the film has been delayed numerous times.
Recently, the release date for Mulan was “delayed indefinitely” but we’ve got some exciting news for you TODAY! We finally know when (and more importantly WHERE) we’ll be watching Mulan SOON!
In an earnings call (which is taking place right this moment!), Disney announced Mulan will be released on their live-streaming service, Disney+! But there’s a slight catch — unlike the rest of Disney+’s content, to watch Mulan you’ll have to be a Disney+ paid subscriber AND cough up an additional $29.99!
Premiere access to Mulan on Disney+ will begin on September 4th and according to Insider, those who pay the charge will have continuous access to the film as long as they remain Disney+ subscribers. In countries where Disney+ is not available, Disney plans to release Mulan in theaters on the same date. We will continue to keep you posted as we learn more from today’s earnings call.

WE KNOW DISNEY.
YOU CAN, TOO.
Will you be paying to watch Mulan at home? Let us know in the comments below if you think it’s worth it!
Donna says
This was just a matter of time. No thanks!
Matt says
What a horrible, greedy idea, and terrible precedent. This is not what I think most of us expected from Disney+.
Dan says
I am utterly disappointed with Disney on this. $29.99?! No thanks- guess we’ll just wait for the DVD to be released. Disney is losing touch with its customers.
BA in SOMD says
I wouldnt pay an extra $2.99 – much less $29.99. They should have done that with Hamilton. People would have paid for that. Not this one.
Linda says
No. just no. We saw the trailer for Mulan in the theater. The film seemed be visually stunning but the visuals will be wasted on the small screen. We usually see Disney movies at least twice in the theater. We won’t even be seeing this once. I agree, Matt. I did not expect this from Disney+
Stephanie says
I would have paid for my family of four to see this in the movie theater. I will now pay less to watch it in the comfort and safety of my home. Given what’s going with Corona I am happy to have a brand new family friendly movie we can all enjoy. Looking forward to September 4th!
Natalie says
I’m not sure what the complaints are about. It costs my family of 5 nearly $60 just for tickets every time we go to the theater to see a movie in a sticky, crowded, and potentially noisy room. I do realize the only difference is that you have to be a Disney+ subscriber, and that is likely only to cut the overhead of Disney releasing through Apple or some other movie rental/purchase platform.
Steph says
Does that $30 keep it on my disney + indefinitely or just once?? I mean no mushu. So why bother?
Christy says
That is a really steep price. I would love to watch it, but am going pass until it is on DVD.
Myke D says
I didn’t care for the animation version, definitely won’t pay 29 bucks to see it… Anywhere for that matter.
Susan says
I agree with the majority. The price exceeds the want 🙁
Nick DiSandro says
I will not pay to see this movie in addition to what I already pay! It is not worth it!
Carl Snook says
My wife and I had just agreed that it would be worth an extra $5.99 to see this on Disney+. Actually, she wasn’t convinced and was just trying to make my daughter happy. This price makes Mulan a pass for now in our house,
Carly says
I do see where it’s cheaper for families than your usual movie experience, so I understand how they got to the cost … but I still think it’s too high since most people are only going to think about how they’re paying to stay home. I may still pay for it but I’m also going to wait a few weeks to see if they discount it or just end up streaming it for the regular subscription (which I suspect they may do rather quickly). It’s a gamble and I know the entire industry is watching to see if it pays off … someone was bound to try this sooner or later, and Disney just happens to be first.
Andre says
I see a lot of complaining about this. Even comments about people who say they would’ve seen this twice in the theaters. Maybe you’ve all forgotten that you’ll pay way more than $30 to take your family to the theaters to see this…..especially if you see it more than once. I think this is a great idea. Sure, it’s not as desirable as the $20 price tag that movies like Trolls released on demand, but this is still better than having to wait until some point next year for a chance to see this in theaters.
Also keep in mind that Disney spent $200 million making this movie and they aren’t trying to take a huge loss by putting this on Disney+ for free.
Nicki says
I would pay ( still cheaper than a night out for 3 at the cinema) – but my daughters are outraged and although they have been waiting for the release date they have said they will not be held ransom by a mega corp to watch it on a streaming service we already pay for!
Fair play to them!
Mickey says
Heck yeah! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you Disney +! Hoping you do the same for Black Widow, the Jungle Cruise, Raya, and Soul. I am happy to to pay extra to see movies that were made for a theater release. Not sure what my family would have done without the Mandalorian, Frozen 2, Aladdin, Onward, Hamilton, and all the other great shows Disney + has brought to us during the pandemic. Keep the MAGIC coming!
Kelly A Eaton says
I hope this is not the beginning of Disney+ starting to charge us for everything. And why not reward the subscribers they already have and offer it at a cheaper price? There is no customer loyalty in this world anymore.
BRYAN says
Fantastic news – we can’t wait! Of course we’d rather see it on the jumbo screen, but we have been waiting long enough.
Lyle says
I have anxiously waiting for this movie, but I do believe that price is a bit steep. Does that price include multiple viewings? That seems reasonable to believe, however it is still overpriced. Do you own the film for that price? Highly unlikely. I would have no issue if it was an additional $9.99 as that seems reasonable. I understand that Disney has spent a boatload of money on this film to make and promote and they are trying to recoup that loss, but I do not see a lot of people paying $29.99. Disney would be wise to lower the price to make it more affordable. What I see happening is a group of people getting together and splitting the cost and that hurts Disney more than it helps. Just lower the price. People will come Ray, people will most definitely come.
Melissa says
I will happily pay the 30.00, it is cheaper than taking my family to the theater.
Tiffany says
If my family of 5 went to a matinee and bought snacks, we would pay $75-$80. Disney is a business and they have to see a return on their investment. Like any other business, they have to make a profit. I consider this a $50 savings.
DFB Sarah says
Lyle, the price includes continuous access to the movie so long as you’re a Disney+ subscriber.
DFB Sarah says
Kelly, participants in the call yesterday indicated they don’t plan on this being a regular thing.
MelisendePF says
For all the folks saying how the price is a bargain for a family of 5 – that’s great if you ARE a family of 5. Many of us subscribers are single, so why should we also be paying the same $29.99 as that group of 5? For one person, thst is simply too high a cost, in addition to the monthly fee.
Erin says
I am excited they are doing this, because going to the movies is one of the things my family misses the most, and watching all of the movies we have been waiting for get pushed back into next year has been really sad. I thought $30 was a little bit pricy, since my family spends less than that to go to a matinee, but was still going to pay it. Knowing now that we get to keep it as long as we have Disney+, I am more than happy to pay the price. It bridges the gap between now and when it would go up anyway, rather than being a restricted viewing period. How people think that every movie should be included in the Disney+ price is beyond me. This was a movie set for a theatrical release, and would not have been available for purchase for quite a while, followed a good chunk of time later by release on Disney+. You weren’t paying for this to begin with. People are very entitled these days.
NJ says
This is a bad experiment. I think it’s better to to wait till it releases digitally and own the movie. Having access to the movie only while a disney+ subscriber isn’t appealing. At least offer some bonus extras like a movie poster or something .
Margaret says
I will probably go ahead and get it – especially with it staying available for the duration of my subscription.
With the huge hit Disney has taken this year – and the fact that this was to be their big summer blockbuster – I’m ok with the charge.
Christine says
I get that the price would be worth it for a family but that’s not worth it for the few of us that are by ourselves. They should offer some kind of rent vs buy offer or multi-use pass of some sort. To start, the price shouldn’t be so steep. New DVDs don’t even go for that much! Pass. I’ll either wait for it to come out on demand or the movie theater or just wait for it to be released for free on Disney+. This is the beginning of Disney+ coming out with tier memberships or extra add-ons. Joy.
RoseMarie Luevano says
I too will not pay the extra 29.99,it just makes Disney look greedy
Jennifer P says
I guess my question is this the ONLY way they will show it? You know there are cities, states and countries that do have movie theaters open.
* I don’t buy DVD’s that are at that price point.
* I’m not RENTING a one time use for at home experience.
* I go to the theaters and SPEND LESS for my family then this for a one time use/view.
* I want to at least experience visual movies like this with Huge Screens, Surround Sound, Audience responses, and reclining leather seats.
Now if my house was say, Oprah’s or Tiger Woods, or George Clooney or something and I have a private movie theater in my home where I can invite 20 of my fam and friends and get the movie theater experience, AND made money like them – Sure I’d pay it.
2 tiered system peeps – the rich and the not so rich.
I really wanted to see that movie – was planning on taking my niece and nephew too. This is a real bummer.
Nicholle says
Awesome news! We have been waiting to see this movie since March and I can’t wait until September 4th!
A trip to the movies with my family would be more than $29.99. I think Disney has offered a fair price for a new movie.
John Herman says
If you have Disney Plus you should be able to watch any thing Disney has to offer ! Disney should of held it up for 2021 for theaters !
Barbara Brzezinski says
Your blog says that $30 will allow you to access Mulan until you let you Disney+ subscription expire. I have heard you can only watch it once and then have to pay for it again. Who is correct?
Sydney Scott says
Totally reasonable. Just between me and my daughter, and that it’s a Disney movie, we would normally see a movie like this in theaters at least 2-3 times, between us seeing it opening night, and with various groups of family. So comparing the cost of tickets (I even go to a $6 per ticket theater), and popcorn and a drink to share, this is the same or less than what I would be spending anyways. I’m excited, our family will be making a family night of it and getting all together to see it. Great excuse to get together after kids’ school work gets done
Arlene says
Absolutely not! Outrageous idea, what if you don’t like the movie? You are then stuck having paid for something you will not watch again.
DFB Sarah says
Barbara, multiple sources reported that purchasers would have continuous access so long as they have Disney+. Insider has a confirmation from a Disney+ representative here.
DFB Sarah says
Jennifer, it sounds like the movie will eventually migrate to Disney+ without the added cost.
DFB Sarah says
Christine, the call yesterday made it sound like this is not intended to become a widely-used strategy going forward. But only time will really tell.
Luanne says
I’ll wait for them to release it on Disney+ without having to pay an extra $30. Some people don’t have a problem coughing up an extra $30, but some of us are single parents, grandparents on a tight budget.
DFB Sarah says
I hear you, Luanne.
HAROLD says
To be one of the first to view a 200 + million dollar movie for just $30 is a bargain. Would you rather wait another 6 months and pay $15.00 per family member to see it in a theater? I have been waiting long enough. I’ll gladly pay the 30 dollars. I’ve paid more than that for an old movie in DVD format.
Sid Huerta says
$30 WOW 😳 ! No thanks!
