So we’ve done quite a bit of coverage on Disney shoes, and even hosted a battle between Crocs and Disney x Native shoes!
And because we do the hard work so you don’t have to, we also wore Crocs all day at Disney World! Although they’re a perfectly suitable shoe for the parks, there is something important that Crocs-wearers need to know before coming to Disney World.
There is ONE place in Disney World where Crocs aren’t *technically* allowed — on escalators! That’s right, if you’re wearing Crocs and need to take an escalator, signage indicates that your chosen shoes are not welcome! The following photo was taken at Disney Springs at the bottom of an escalator, and, yep, those are Crocs behind the big red stripe.
So why in the world would you not be allowed to wear a very popular theme park shoe — one that Disney themselves sell!! — on escalators in Disney World? Well, we looked into it! This is because there have been incidents where Crocs have gotten caught in the escalators — which is obviously unsafe. This apparently happens more often to Croc-wearing kiddos.
In fact, on a recent trip to EPCOT’s Land pavilion, we saw the evidence for ourselves: the escalator was closed because two Crocs-style shoes were STUCK at the bottom! So it’s a real thing, guys. It can actually happen.
The rule of no Crocs on escalators has been around for quite a while, but it’s something people may not even realize when walking by! Is the rule super-enforced? Probably not. I’ve never seen anyone go to Disney jail for wearing Crocs on escalators. It’s likely more of a “we warned you; you can’t sue us” kind of move. But we were intrigued by the sign and figured some of you might be as well!

Our daughter was slightly injured on an escalator when she was 4 or 5 at Universal in Los Angeles when her croc got caught in the mechanism on the side. The security personnel told us that sort of thing has happened before. Fortunately, she just lost some skin around her big toe and still has a scar some 15 years later. It could have been much worse.

Surprised by this article…You would think that they would find a way to accommodate this issue. They usually come up with brilliant ideas to rectify the problem.
As for me, at some point of our vacation, I have to wear crocs because they are comfortable, and help with the blistered feet.

Wow! No crocs on escalators, I seriously thought this was a joke!

What about flip flpos or sandals. i know lots of women wear elegant sandals to dinner or on a date.

Yes, I do and as far as I know I’ve never gotten in trouble for wearing crocs on the escalators.
Trixie says
So do you take the crocs off before getting on the escalator? That would seem to be more dangerous than wearing them….

the edge of a maxi dress got caught in the side brush of a narrow escalator in a sears store. They had to stop it and I wasn’t injured but the manager wanted to cut the $70 dress I had on. This was like 10 years ago. I was standing still and I don’t wear long dresses or loose pants but some do! Those are more of a menace than most crocs. But obvi some child didn’t have them on correctly or was playing? Who knows. All I know is this: stuff happens sometimes to the innocent and you can be just standing and following directions and it just happens freakishly. We Are APS and have visited Disney area 1-2 monthly and we have seen some crazy stuff When it comes to apparel item(s) and how that said apparel item(s) is/are presented and worn. LOL. Also, we are very open minded and like to have fun haha. PS: I love this blog!!!!!

I would imagine that you cannot wear crocs in”Victoria and Albert’s” since it’s the only restaurant in Disney that requires men to wear a jacket and tie. You would look awful silly wearing crocs and a suit

My daughter had on tennis shoes when she was on an escalator in JC Penney’s and got caught. They offered her $50.00. That wouldn’t even cover the cost of a new pair.

I wouldn’t wear them anyway given they are like solid plastic lol
