Change is in the air at the Walt Disney Company.
November 8th, 2023 brought the fourth quarter and final earnings call for the Walt Disney Company. Disney CEO Bob Iger has made it a priority to improve streaming platforms, including Disney+, and Hulu. And now, we have an update on some big changes coming for streaming.
Disney previously announced that it would be buying out Comcast’s remaining stake in Hulu, making the streaming service completely Disney-owned. During Disney’s Q3 earnings call earlier this year, we learned that Disney would soon offer a “one-app experience” bringing Hulu content into the Disney+ app. And now, we have an update!
Disney announced during the Q4 earnings call on November 8th that a beta version of Disney+ and Hulu bundled into one app will launch in December, with an official launch slated for early spring/March 2024. Disney shared it is trying to make more content available by bundling the two services.
CEO Bob Iger stated, “Just imagine the opportunities” regarding the new combo. He also said the company is “implementing stronger standards around account sharing.” Disney did recently begin cracking down on password sharing, but, they don’t expect to see how that will affect streaming revenue until 2025.
We know that streaming is Iger’s “number one priority” at the company, and during the earnings call he shared that throughout the year, there was a big increase in subscribers. The last quarter was a great one, with the addition of 7 million core Disney+ subscribers, and the addition of content like Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Elemental, and The Little Mermaid.
We’ll continue to keep an eye on more Disney news you need to know, so stay tuned to DFB for the latest.
