If streaming services are starting to feel exactly like cable used to back in the day to you, you’re not alone.

Between formerly ad-free services becoming full of ads and efforts to put an end to password sharing, it’s becoming increasingly complicated to be a consumer of the latest and greatest content (champagne problems, am I right?). And, if you’re a Hulu subscriber, we’ve got an update you might want to know about.
Hulu will begin cracking down on password sharing, The Hollywood Reporter has shared. Disney+ began a similar initiative back in October 2023, and it appears as though Hulu is following suit.

An email was sent to Hulu (which is owned by Disney) subscribers on January 31st, warning them of an updated subscriber agreement that bars sharing accounts outside of the user’s household.
“Unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household,” the change to the agreement stated. “‘Household’ means the collection of devices associated with your primary personal residence that are used by the individuals who reside therein,” the email stated.

The new terms will become effective on March 14th, and Hulu has warned users that they can “limit or terminate access to the Service and/or take any other steps as permitted” if they find that a subscriber has violated the agreement.

News that an effort to curb password sharing came during Disney’s November 2023 earnings call, when Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Disney and Hulu would be “implementing stronger standards around account sharing.”
